i have been on bcp for the past couple of years and recently came off of them because they made feel horrible. But now i have a new prob, i found that i've developed an allergy to latex and spermicide, so i'm desperately in search of a new form of bc

plus finding latex free condoms has become difficult

So to get to my questions...

  • would u recommend a diaphragm?
  • how does a diaphragm work?
  • and where do u get it?

Re: Diaphragm

  • For a diaphragm to be effective, you have to use it with spermicide.  Many of them are made of latex.

You get fitted for one by your gynecologist and then s/he writes you a prescription.

  • thanx, i'll ask my gyn next time i go, but it sounds like i need to continue my search

    ne1 else have ne ideas?????

  • My diaphragm was made from latex and had to be used with spermicide...I'm not sure if they make them latex free.

I  have heard good things about IUDs

  • They can make diaphragms latex free (I think).  I believe my doctor mentioned this when I saw her.  They also make different types of spermicide.  So if there's one specific one that you're allergic to, maybe try to track one down that is easier on your system.  I love my diaphragm.  It's a barrier method that you place in front of your cervix. Neither of you should be able to feel it if it's in right.  When used correctly with spermicide I believe it's about 95% effective.  So less effective than bcp, more effective than condoms.
