Twilight, book discussion!!!

I only have a few minutes left on my lunch break but I wanted to get this thread going!

I *LOVED* this book! I finished it within 24 hours of starting it, I just couldn't put it down.

I had really wondered if I would get into it due to the slightly odd vampire/human relationships but the book was written excellently!

Re: Twilight, book discussion!!!

  • I completely agree. I was kind of put off by the whole human/vampire thing at first, but I really got into it. I had to go out and buy the sequels.

Meyers says that she wrote the story based on a dream of the conversation in the woods. There are a lot of issues here to discuss - the evil vs. good side of vampires- can there be a distinction? What do you think?

  • I have to try to remember what was in just the first book and what is getting into the 2nd and 3rd-I'll try to monitor for those who haven't read yet. The whole thought process of good/evil or soul/no soul continues throughout the series...so if you are intrigued, keep reading! The other two books are so good-I already pre-ordered the final book that comes out in August.

I definitely found that it was a very interesting twist to have "vegetarian" vampires. It definitely makes them a more likeable character-would we all see Edward the same if he drank human blood? Probably not. In that light, I think there is definitely a good/bad aspect to the vampire race portrayed in the books. The difference between the Cullens and James' coven is very important. It almost becomes a difference in who is civilized/uncivilized.

I loved the way that she almost created her own set of vampire ideals-dispelling the myths previously held of vampires. That was very inventive.

On thought I'd like to pose-what is it about Edward that everyone is so drawn to? I felt very much throughout the book like he was such a magnetic character-all of the scenes he was in stood out so much more. All of the fan sites I've seen and even Stephenie herself are so dedicated to Edward. I just can't put my finger on what it is about him that is so great as a character-he's very passionate and mysterious. Maybe that's it?

  • I am at parent-teacher conferences tonight so not much time to chat...

Anyway, just wanted to jump on the bandwagon and say that I really liked it. I didn't think I would care for it much, but I was really drawn in! I have the next book on my wishlist on paperback swap.

I think at least part of the attraction to Edward has to do with the attraction to the unattainable. He's also a little bad, but you can trust that he's not going to hurt you because he keeps everything under control.
  • I really enjoyed this book and tonight I am about to finish the second. I also cannot get enough of Edward. I love how much he cares for Bella and how is willing to do anything to protect her. He is mysterious yet willing to share so much about himself with her. I think since Bella is so attracted to him and how well he is described that just makes him even more attractive.

DH read the book after me since he enjoys vampire and zombie books. He said he enjoyed it, but the only thing that drove him nuts is how willing Bella was to stop her life to become a vampire. I told him when you are in love some people are willing to do just about anything. I then brought up to him his first love and how he almost moved to the other side of the world to be with her. hah..

I do like that they made the good vs. evil vampires and I hope that if I ever ran into a vampire it would be a good one.

  • If ever we get to the point of everyone having read all three - I think we need to have a discussion as to the merits of Edward vs. Jacob.

  • I so wish the nest had a quote function...

I think I am going to have to buy the other two books this weekend...I can't handle not knowing what is going on! :)~

I think the allure with Edward is the looks and his complacent but still interested attitude. He seems to be chilling most of the time but there is something about him that shows that he is always thinking/watching what is going on.

The whole concept of the vampire thing is out there but the way the story flows combined with the abstaining from human blood sucking thing takes it into a level of readability. I do like how they went thru Bella's process of invisioning Edward sleeping in a coffin and the stereotypical vampire myths...it helped draw the reader in. At least for me, b/c that's what I had in my head!! :)

  • I would LOVE to have the Edward/Jacob discussion...that is killing me right now. Everybody go read the other two so we can discuss!

I know that she chose an apple for the cover of the book because of the whole forbidden fruit/good and evil concept. That was interesting to me-I almost wonder if she wasn't referring to Bella's want to become a vampire and that as the "forbidden fruit" or her knowledge of the vampire world...

In case you haven't seen it yet-here is who they have cast as the Cullen's, and then if you scroll down you will see Bella. Are they what you pictured?

  • Personally, I think Edward is a dead ringer-I pictured him a little bit more muscular, but everything else about him is perfect. I love the girl they chose for Alice, and Emmett and Rosalie are okay. I pictured Esme and Carlisle just a little bit older. Jasper is all wrong, IMO. And Kristen Stewart for Bella is pretty close to perfect.

  • I would just like to put this out there - I could never cuddle up to any of the vamp boys - they would be entirely too cold for me!!

Also - I agree, Penny. I checked out the website. I can see all the vamps except for the boys. Edward and Carlisle are fine, but the other two just aren't what I had expected (although those were some awfully cheesy press photos).

  • Has anyone read Chapter 1 of "Midnite Sun", Meyer's side-project of "Twilight" from Edward's perspective?

  • It will be interesting to see how close they movie stays to the book.

I wonder if they will add stuff or take stuff away.
  • I finished the second book last night and just like others have said, I think the first one is better. I am excited to read the third, but I have to wait my turn at the library.

Looking at the movie Cullens I am not sure if they are all what I had pictured while reading. But then thinking about it, I cannot really describe what they might look like in my head. I am excited to see what they do with the movie and I hope it will be just as good as the book.

  • Stephenie Meyers said on her website that she always asks people to read the 2nd book twice, because people get so wrapped up in Bella's problems that they miss the development of Jacob's character. I think the 3rd book is better than the 2nd, but I want to reread the 2nd just to see if I will like it better the 2nd time.
