New Book Recommendations

I was just wondering how everyone decides what books to read.  I tend to find an author that I like (Jodi Piccoult, Sophie Kinsella) and then get stuck reading all of her books.  Lately, I've been going to the bookstore and just walking around, looking, then I write down the titles that look interesting and get them from the library.  But I'm always interested in how other people decide what book to read, especially now when it's time to choose a new book for my book club at school.

Re: New Book Recommendations

  • Since last year I've pretty much relied on this board as a starting point- from thebookbio, to the book club selections, to a Rave posts from someone on a book, etc.

Then I go on to Amazon or goodreads and read more about the book, and if it seems like a fit I add it to my list.

There's also a site called whatshouldireadnext.com that can point you in a direction based on a book you like.

  • I rely on book blogs and word of mouth. I read the blogs of YA writers and read what they suggest. I also rely on my teaching friends and the girls I tutor to recommend good reads.

I read what Chicklit tells me to read.

Haha, no really, I rely on word of mouth from the girls on this board, from my students, and from blogs of YA writers I like.

  • I have gotten so many recs from the women on this board.  Every week I read through the "What are you reading?" posts and add a ton of books to my Goodreads TBR list.

I also read the book blogs of some nesties and some authors and get some great suggestions there!

I read author blogs and usually add their recommendations to my TBR list.  Add that to recs from this board, friends, and students, and I'm kept very busy.

  • I read what Young_Love/RevJen/June & Jacki tell me to :)

Other than that I read the What Are You Reading posts for ideas, look into books that are getting a lot of attention here, read nestie blogs and see what people have added on goodreads.

  • Most of the books I find are how you describe, just walking around the bookstore and looking for titles that seem interesting.  Yesterday we hit Barnes & Noble and I got a couple of things off the buy 2 get 1 free table that I probably never would have picked up if they hadn't been for sale.

  • Facebook has compiled a list of 1001 Popular Books To Read Before You Die and I've basically been picking books from there.  It has a little bit of everything:  classics, chick lit, ya reads...
  • i get recommendations from this board, and sometimes from people i know. also, on the barnes and noble website, on the right side of the screen there is a section showing "customers who bought this also bought." i have found a lot of good authors that way.
  • I rely on this board a lot for recommendations. Also, I check out the thrift store for books that look interesting, but wouldn't buy for full price. Sometimes I just walk around the library looking for books.

  • I get a lot of ideas from this board and the book bio, book blogs, and then I go to the library and look at their "recent releases" section to see what's new that I might like, or I just peruse the shelves there (we have a tiny library).  I also go to the bookstores and poke around there for new things.  I'm not really a find-an-author-read-all-their-stuff kind of person really though.  It's rare that I read two things from the same author in the same month (unless it's a series).

Heyrebekah-  Did you grab The Chicago Way by Michael Harvey off the buy two-get one table???  I did last week and it was FANTASTIC!  a really great murder-mystery novel.

  • I use this board and friends on goodreads lists but I am a sucker for catchy titles and pretty covers....
The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page.
  • Wandering through the bookstore to see what catches my interest.  Stalking Amazon and Borders online.  I got into historical fiction from Lishie's recommendations here.

    My favorite Cake Wreck ever.

  • I decide a lot through Good Reads. I look through, read reviews, search categories, etc. Also, I like similar authors to you... here are a few other authors I would?recommend:

    ?Nicholas Sparks

    Jennifer Weiner

    Janet Evanovich ?

  • Mostly this board. This board has really opened my eyes to books I never knew about.

    Also Goodreads and bookstores websites.

They didn't have that at my B&N, sounds cool though.
