Re: More on the octoplets mother....

  • Thanks for posting. DH & I have had some questions about her situation which her mother's comments largely address in the article.  Still, a couple of things seem odd or questionable...

    1) Her daughter's obsession with children caused Angela Suleman considerable stress, so she sought help from a psychologist, who told her to order her daughter out of the house....."Maybe she wouldn't have had so many kids then, but she is a grown woman," Angela Suleman said. "I feel responsible and I didn't want to throw her out."

--  I don't get this logic at all. Why should her mother feel responsible when she's just acknowledged her daughter is a grown woman??  Of course, NOW she's ready to bolt..now that her daughter has more than doubled her brood, which --her mom also acknowledges in the above -- may not have happened if she (the mom) had followed her therapist's advice to begin with.  I'm not saying the mom is responsible, I just don't get her line of thinking.

    2) Angela Suleman said her daughter always had trouble conceiving and underwent in vitro fertilization treatments because her fallopian tubes are "plugged up." . . . . .told reporters Friday that doctors implanted far fewer than eight embryos but they multiplied. Experts said this could be possible since Nadya Suleman's system has likely been hyperstimulated for years with fertilization treatments and drugs.

-- Admittedly, I'm no doctor or expert, but this doesn't make sense to me. Hyperstimulation would affect her ovarian output (more eggs) but if her tubes truly are clogged, it's not likely they'd ever be fertilized. Of course, stranger things have happened, but even with rare odds, it wouldn't seem likely that more than 1 or 2 would make it through and be fertilized....assuming sperm were present...which it doesn't sound like would be the case since this pregnancy supposedly resulted from a frozen embryo transfer.  And yes, it's very possible for embryos to split into identicals, but as far as I know, that's a chromosomal matter that's independent from influence by hormones or drugs.  Anyone know anymore about this phenomenon??

  • I know nothing about fertility specialist, in-vitro, ect...but I do wonder, how the heck did she afford that? And why would any doctor take her on? Even if she tried to hide the fact she had so many other kids, couldn't they tell from scarring on the uterus or something? I didn't think they ever implanted 8 eggs at one time for this reason.

WTF?  Part of me admires that she wouldn't want to just abort the embryos because I believe life begins at conception.

But there are thousands of potential mothers-to-be who would have welcomed those embryos and would probably have been in a better position to give those kids a good home.  Of course I have no idea how you go about donating your embryos to other mothers and what bureaucratic/legal issues you have to go through to do that.

Still, a single mom of 14 kids all under the age of 7?  That is a welfare nightmare and completely irresponsible!
