S/O Alterations debacle

A few years ago, I was in a wedding that was about a 6 hour drive away. Anyhow, the bride ordered all the bridesmaid dresses through the shop where she got her dress. We all came down for a first fitting about 3 months or so before the wedding (alterations were included in the price of the dresses). Because most of us lived rather far away, we couldn't make it for another fitting until the day before the wedding.

My dress didn't need many alterations. It was way too long, but other than that, it pretty much fit perfectly. One of the other bridesmaids (M) had been losing weight, and her dress was absolutely huge on her and needed tons of alterations.

Fast forward to the day before the wedding.  M and I go to the shop to try on our dresses. Hers looked like it hadn't even been altered, and she was swimming in it. She'd lost a little more weight since the first fitting, but not much. My dress on the other hand had inexplicably been taken in and I couldn't even pull it all the way down over my hips!

For the life of me, I don't know how that happened. I mean, they pinned the dresses to mark what alterations needed to be done. It doesn't make sense. Thankfully, they were able to let my dress back out and alter M's in time.

Re: S/O Alterations debacle

  • Thankfully they were able to do all that the day before the wedding. I would have been freaking out if I was the bride.

    Oh, believe me, she was!

  • I'm so glad they were able to fix them.

My store I ordered my brides maid dresses from placed the wrong order and my ivory dresses came in white and needed altered. They told me when I brought this up that they couldn't do anything about it because they store was closing in a month! Would have been nice to know when I placed my order.

So my bridesmaids wore white and navy dresses when everything else was ivory in my wedding. Not a huge deal but I was very annoyed with the store.

  • My bridesmaids dresses were "lost" in the mail for, oh, three months or so. Still got there in time for the wedding, but that was stress I really didn't need, you know? Angry

  • Yeah, it was good they were done in time. M's didn't look great, but there's only so much you can do when you're taking a dress in about 3 sizes!
  • I tell you what... the bridesmaids dresses were the hardest, weren't they? I think it's just because there's so many of them, and they're all supposed to look the same. My sister had to come in from Seattle (we're in Chicago) and was only able to have a fitting once about 3 months before the wedding. The store was really mad that she couldn't come back for a second fitting, but it just wan't possible. Thankfully, it fit fine when she tried it on the day before the wedding.

I'm glad everything worked out, I'm sure the bride was STRESSED OUT! Not the way you want to be 24 hours before you walk down the aisle.
