Bad news

I got laid off this afternoon.

In a way, I think I'm OK with it because I've been thinking about leaving my firm for a while, but it sucks. Especially when they say (and I believe them) that the only reason for doing so is because I'm paid the most and they can't afford to keep me.

Now I've gotta figure out what to do with my life.

  • Elizabeth, I am SO sorry.  That is terrible news.  I am sure you'll find something amazing very soon, but that is really sucky.

  • Big time bummer Left Hug , on the plus side it gives you a good opportunity to make a career change, good luck with the soul searching and new career hunting.
  • I'm sorry to hear this.  As you said it will give you a chance to take a look at what you want to do. Good luck.

  • Thanks, ladies. I have to admit it feels kind of weird that you're the first people I've told about this. Wink

I would've liked a bit more warning. I mean, I understand why they did it the way they did, but it caught me completely by surprise.

  • Oh no, I'm sorry! Even if you were already leaving, it sucks not to be able to do it on your own terms. On the plus side, though, you can collect unemployment now.?

Zombie hugs and best of luck figuring out your next move. ?

  • Very sorry to hear it!  Good luck with figuring it all out.  You know you get reciprocity in Wisconsin, right? Wink

Hmm, on second thought, the winking smiley kind of makes it look like I'm hitting on you.

  • Oh no, Elizabeth, I'm so sorry to hear that. You're right, being blindsighted is never fun, but perhaps you can take this opportunity to figure out what you want to do with your future... and I hope you find something soon!
  • Oh I am so sorry. The no warning thing really sucks.

But, if you were thinking about a career change, this could be anopportunity for you to take some time to really make that happen.  We know you are brilliant, so I'm sure you'll find something fabulous soon!

  • I'm so sorry!  I knew when I saw your post title what the news likely was.  Look on the bright side - there's LOTS you can do with a JD!  Lots of opportunity to do something meaningful.

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • Oh, boo.  I'm sorry to hear that.  Make sure to file for unemployment asap, and hang in there.
  • Ah ***.  I'm really sorry.  Man - you would've thought the could ask if you'd take a pay cut or give you some warning....

I hope you find something wonderful to do, and it is true that a JD is so translatable. For what it's worth we have a handful of attorneys working in my office - I do fundraising and development for a cancer center.  It's incredibly rewarding and a lot of fun.

    Good luck,

    Elizabeth

(and by the way, whenever I see your sig I want to reach through the screen and pet your kitty - she's sooooo cute!)

  • I'm sorry this happened...even when you're not happy where you are, it's still a tough situation to be in.

Like everyone else said--I am sure you'll be able to find something that makes you feel better in what you do and makes you happy.

    Good luck!
