Modular Homes?

DH and I are looking to sell our house for a larger and more functional space. We wanted to build, but after talking to a builder it seems like a lot more of a headache than we're interested in. During this process, we learned that one of out favorite homes down the road is actually a modular home. I always thought modular wasn't as nice as a stick built home, but now I'm told some modulars are even stronger and as good if not better quality than stick built. Anyone buy and buying a modular home? Any insight?

? ? ?

Re: Modular Homes?

  • While house shopping, our real estate agent has cautioned us that re-selling a modular house may be more difficult down the line. They are generally set on a different type of support beam, so if you decide to go with a modular, you may want to investigate if there are different options for support beams. Also, he has let us know that modular homes on concrete slabs are not worth as much as ones build on concrete block foundations, which are not worth as much as ones on a poured concrete (full basement) foundation. As to the quality of the craftsmanship of the actual home, I think that will vary by what company/builder you purchase through.

A construction contractor or home inspector might be able to give you more information about how to tell the good ones from the lower quality ones.
