Seriously, I'm a dork.
So, which of the following tricks to help you to remember the correct grammar/spelling (or even math or science- those are fun, too) is your favorite??

Anniversary

After 2 years of TTC, lots of tests, and a Hysteroscopy/Laparoscopy to remove several polyps,
Clomid/IUI #1 3/14: cancelled due to surprise BFP 3/8/14.
Beta 1 3/11: 398  Beta 2 3/13: 728  Beta 3 3/20: 11,482
Surprise BFP turns into Surprise Twins!

I before E, except after C, or sounding like A as in neighbor or weigh. Also remember, Weird is weird, and doesn't follow this rule because it's weird.

When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking. (coat, meat, team, wait)

You're/Your, It's/Its, Who's/Whose, Does You are/It is or It has/Who has or Who is make sense?

And I/And me. Take out the other people to see which one is right. John and I had pizza or John and me had pizza? Remove John, and it would be 'I had pizza'.

Re: CPW: I heart Grammar/Spelling

  • I'm a total grammar snob, so I use all of these, but I've never heard of the second one. Thanks!

  • Yeah, I'm probably not good enough to consider myself a snob, but I'm a dork for sure. I want to learn more!  :)

  • Grammar geek here, all the way. But I really don't use any of these. English contains far too many exceptions to its rules, so I simply learned by reading and by doing. The only time cute "rules" helped me remember anything was in science or math class when my brain couldn't handle all the logic! Hahaha.

  • I get frustrated with people because grammar is one of those things that just makes sense to me, regardless of whether I have a "rule" to back up what I'm saying. Then I realize that's how DH must feel when he tries to explain a math problem to his 12 year old son and I don't get it!

  • PandP - I can relate.. I do the same thing, especially with spelling. Spelling has just always clicked for me so I don't understand people who can't spell. I have to remind myself that it's just not their strong suit, and that's ok!  Because just like you, I can NOT do math! Anytime husband tries to explain something mathematical to me, we both get frustrated. I'm just glad we can all bring something different to the table :)

On that note, a favorite of mine was always "Double the C, double the S, and you will always have success". Thanks for that one, Full House! :)

In Christ alone my hope is found. He is my LIGHT, my STRENGTH, and my SONG!

  • This reminds me: on "Mole Day" DH had to explain to me like I was 5 the significance and how it's used. My brain just refused to grasp it for a while.

Science and math are definitely not my things!

  • My favorite was always the riddle to spell Mississippi, but I grew up along the Mississippi river. So it was a big deal that you knew how to spell it.

I used to be an awesome speller. Would win Spelling Bee's and all of that stuff. Then after college it all went downhill.  Not sure if it's because I don't use it as often now, or what.  I hate that I have to now Google how to spell things.

  • @RAB - Absolutely; I'm so glad DH and I are good at different things! He can help SS with his math and I proofread all his English homework. I've already been told when SS starts taking a foreign language I'm going to have to help him.

I also like "Never believe a lie."

  • I love all the grammar rules. My friends and I used to love looking for typos in newspapers. Our local newspaper was so bad that we called it "The Daily Mistake." We were all on the newspaper staff at our high school.

Funny story: We had just printed hundreds of copies of the paper and we found a typo. The article title read, "PDA: Innocent Act or Pubic Indecency?" We left out the L in Public so it read "Pubic." We had to go back through and re-write all the L's in with pen so we could hand out the papers.

I have to admit, I didn't even notice the missing L when I read this. I can see how it was missed!

You have hit my passion point. Grammar makes me so damn happy. I use the "And I/And me" all the time with my kiddos. We talk about subject and object pronouns. I may or may not squee audibly. Some of the other tips are better for spelling in the elementary schools.

Let me introduce you to the best tip I've ever given my students: the Alot.
I have a sign in my classroom that declares my room a "Monster-Free Zone." If a kid writes alot instead of a lot, I take a staple remover and "eat" their paper and write "Oh no! The Alot ate your paper!" by the error. It is great.

So...want to talk about gerunds? ;-)
