Crib mobiles

Love em or leave em?

Yes, I'm very needy this week.

Re: Crib mobiles

  • I made a very cheap one but I don't think it did anything for DD.  Now at 11 months, she likes to swat at the birds as part of her wake-up ritual after we pick her up out of the crib.

    So....I think it's kid-specific but I wouldn't buy an expensive one.

  • I wouldn't say they are necessary. Get a used one if you can.  We had this  projection one for Jack and he would swat at the animals sometimes and when he started ripping them off, we removed the hanging part and now he likes to watch the projection of animals on the ceiling.  It does project onto the inside of the dome too.  It's a bit bright and only runs for 20 minutes before shutting off.  You can turn off the lights and just run the music/nature sounds/creepy heartbeat.

  • Ive found that a sound machine-white noise or lullabys--works better to soothe my babies rather than a mobile (which I did have with both girls). However, I never had a mobile like Jen mentioned. Mine were either a wind up musical one which only played music for a couple minutes or a homemade one without any sound at all. DD2 does love the ugly seahorse thats lights up and plays music though.

  • We had a crank mobile. He liked it but it definitely wasn't a necessity.

  • We have this one and love it. Kernal, you can borrow it if you want b/c we're done with it. I don't know the next time I'll see you, though.

  • We held off until he had a solid sleep schedule, and then used it as something to keep him occupied if I had to put him down while I put clothes away or cleaned up a dirty diaper.  We never used it for sleep though.

  • Thanks, everyone. We have this projection pooh bear already that puts stars on the ceiling and we have a white noise machine that can also play music. However, their swings have spinning mobiles and I find them staring at them often. So I think I'll just get real simple spinning ones that don't make noise, etc.

Esyn - I like that one you have! I think I might not see you till after G's surgery. I'm hoping they'll be in their cribs by then (we are going to try again starting this weekend). If this doesn't work I'll let you know bc then there is a chance ill see you before I need it!

  • Ok! We didn't get a musical one, b/c it distracted him when we'd want him to sleep. We have a musical seahorse that we put in the crib when we know he's awake, but want him to be quiet and chilled-out.
