  • What do you mean by love? I'm convinced my cat loves me. The other night we came home late and our cat wasn't home. We were in bed when she finally showed up. She came to our bedroom to make sure we were home, looked at us, meowed and then went downstairs to eat. My cat's always so excited to see us when we've been gone for hours even though she has food and water available and can come and go as she pleases.
  • I think so! My cat is like my shadow, he follows me from room to room, stares at me with big blinky eyes, purrs the second I touch him, and curls up with me to sleep at night.  He does not do these things to/with my DH, even though we have pretty even roles in his care.

Now does he write me poetry and buy me chocolates? No.  But when he was a stray he would leave us his own form of "presents".  Now that we have taken him in and he is 100% indoors, this has obviously stopped, but I don't doubt that this behavior would start up again if he had the resources.  Oh and he misses me when I am away, DH says he will go room to room looking, will wait at the front door, and will only sleep on my side of the bed when I am gone (visiting my parents or at conferences etc)

My cat is so obvious in his affection, but I have met cats that are much more aloof than most, so does this mean they "love" their people less? I don't know...But I don't think so.

What are the studies using as reference points? What is the "standard" of love?  I mean even people have a sliding scale of what they consider love, so I don't don't how you would even measure it...

Oh dear lord, please keep your cat indoors! She could get attacked by another animal or hit by a car out wandering by herself. Not to mention getting scared by something unusual and running off and getting lost in an unfamiliar area.

Your cat will be safer and healthier staying indoors!

OP: I wouldn't say our cats "love" us, but they absolutely show us deep affection. One cat likes to "talk" to us, and one or the other will typically be around to greet us when we get home.

  • I know for a fact my Evie loves me. She is my little shadow, and she likes to "talk" to me while I'm making dinner. She walks me to the door as I head to work in the morning and is at the door to greet me every day when I get home. She also sleeps right outside the bedroom door (she is not allowed in the bedroom) and perks right up as soon as I come out of the bedroom, even if she is fast asleep.

When DH and I get home from trips, she isn't mad at me- just very happy to see me! And when I forget to fill her food or water dish, she doesn't get mad. As soon as I notice and afill it, she licks me and rubs on me before she eats. She is very well-mannered!

She will come whenever I call for her, and knows what the word "no" means- like if she tries to go into the bedroom when the door is wide open. She will drop her favorite toy on my feet, and if I don't pick it up, she'll hop on my lap and take a nap. She won't even get mad that I don't want to play. She will also play just as long as I want to. But I think the cutest thing she does, is she will get me to follow her to a room in the house, she'll stop right in front of the room and look at me and meow, as if asking if she can go in the room. If I say "go on" she'll go in, but if I don't say anything, she won't go in the room.

I love my kitty and she loves me!

  • My male cat loves me more than anything. He cuddles with me every night and if I have to work overnights or I am gone for a weekend, my husband says he stays by the door and cries. He is so excited to see me when I get home that he does not leave my side. If that is not love, I'm not sure what is.
