Honeymoon in Greece

Has anyone gone to Greece for their honeymoon? I have dreamed of going there forever and especially for a honeymoon. The islands like Santorini and Mykonos just look amazing in pictures. I was wondering if it was worth going to Athens and doing the whole historical tour and sightseeing thing? Was also wondering when would be the best time to go ( warm enough for the beach but cool enough to not spend the week searching for AC relief) and about how much a week long vacation there might cost, without airfare, since I am sure that will cost at least $1,000 each. Thanks!

Re: Honeymoon in Greece

  • While I haven't gone yet, DH and I booked our trip to Greece 2mths ago.  We are going at the end of March, when the weather will be around 65 and sunny (not too hot, not cold and not touristy).  Air + hotel (4 star Crown Plaza) cost us $2500.  We are also flying to Santorini for a day and that will cost about $300-400.  We will be in Greece 6 nights.  We are history buffs and wanting to do the whole historic Athens thing.  My advice, get a book or 2, look at trip advisor and decide if it's a place you want to go.

  • Sounds great, is that $2500 each or for both?
  • It was for both.  It was a great deal considering airfare alone would have been around $2400.  We went through Delta Vacations.  We are skymiles members so we usually fly Delta whenever possible.  I decided to check out Delta Vacations hotels, just to see what they offered, and was pleasantly surprised.  The prices are great, and you can usually find a $100 discount under "deals" on the website.

  • I was in Athens for a business trip last year at the end of May.  I spent a few days exploring the city and also doing a day trip out to see some of the nearby islands.  Athens isn't the prettiest city in Europe.  Of the 18 countries I have been to over there, it's probably my least favorite European city (sadly).  Having said that, I am so grateful that I had the chance to see the Acropolis and explore the Acropolis museum.  Both were outstanding.

My favorite thing was to go out to visit the islands.  I didn't get as far as Santorini or Mykonos, but the three I visited were gorgeous (Hydra, Egina, and Poros).  You can do local ferries to all of these islands.  The water in Hydra was gorgeous, but it was still too cold for swimming.

I stayed in a very basic hotel in the old city part of Athens for about $100/night.  I don't know what the cost of hotels are on the islands.

I wish I had spent more time there to visit either Mykonos and/or Santorini (I was saving for my wedding at the time).  I agree that they look amazing.   Although I might be too old for the Mykonos party scene.

I would suggest thinking about September for travel.  The hotels will probably be cheaper and the water should still be warm.  Europeans travel a lot in August, so beach destinations are often busiest then.

  • I didn't go there for my honeymoon but we're planning an anniversary trip there for next year. My husband has been to Greece and doesn't really want to stop in Athens for our trip, although I want to. He loves Mykonos and Santorini and says we should spend all our time in these heavenly places. I love city sight seeing so I image we'll stop for a couple of days when we arrive and then spend most of the time on the islands. I've heard about how amazing Greece is for 10 years now (his fav place to go) so I'm happy to finally get there
