Best/Worst of 2012

What was your most and least favorite book(s) of the year? What made it so amazing or disappointing?

Best - Behind the Beautiful Forevers, The Story of Beautiiul Girl, I Am Forbidden, & The Giver. They were all extraordinarily well-written and kept me turning pages without stopping until I was finished.

Worst - The Flame Alphabet & The Vanishers - These are probably much better books than I'm giving them credit for. I think I was hoping they would do more for me but they were too far outside my genre comfort zone.

Re: Best/Worst of 2012

  • Best- Insurgent, Pandemonium, Amy and Roger's Epic Detour, The Lover's Dictionary

This was the year I was first really starting to get into the NBC and all of their wonderful recomendations.... so included in this is the rest of the Delirium and Divergent Series as well as the Discovery of witch's all of which I read this year

Worst- 50 Shades of Grey (seriously why did I read this? damn peer pressure... awful), Between You and Me by Marissa Calin, Bumped by Megan McCafferty

I was really hoping for more on the last one because I loved the Jessica Darling series but it failed to meet my expectations.

  • I gave quite a few books 5-star ratings in 2012.  The stand-outs for me were: TFIOS, Speak, The Raven Boys, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close (Jonathan Foer), the T&A series, and of course, SWAT :).  I also started several amazing YA series, including The Seven Realms, The Grisha, Mara Dyer, and Daughter of Smoke and Bone.

My worst of 2012 were probably Drood (Dan Simmons) and The Little Stranger (Sarah Waters).  Both were slogs to read and the plot line never seemed to go anywhere.  I gave 2 stars to Alexandra Adornetto's Halo, but I honestly can't remember a single thing about it - and according to GR I read it at the end of September.  In 2012 I gave Isabel Allende another try - she's my SIL's absolute favorite author - with Island Beneath the Sea, and at this point I think that IA's just not my style.

  • Best: The Name of the Wind and The Wise Man's Fear, most of the Outlander books.

ETA: And how could I forget The Fault in Our Stars

Worst: Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley. I didn't even finish it, I hated it so much. It was supposed to be a sequel to Gone with the Wind, but it just didn't work for me.

  • Best: Fault in our Stars, The Night Circus (I loved, loved, loved this book), A Game of Thrones and A Clash of Kings.

Worst: Buddha in the Attic, I really just didn't like the narration style.

Peony in Love, the main character really annoyed me and I couldn't relate to the story.

Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?, I just didn't find this book funny at all.

  • Best: Before I Fall by Lauren Oliver.  I honestly couldn't tell you what was so amazing about it.  At first I was annoyed by the MC.  After about halfway, I couldn't stop. I had been listening to it on audio and stopped at the library that night so I could finish it ASAP.  When I finished, I only gave it 4 stars, but I kept thinking about it for days.  I went back and changed it to five.  If it still has an impact on me a week later, it definitely deserves 5 stars IMO.

Worst: Unleashed (Wolf Springs Chronicles #1) by Nancy Holder.  I suffered to finish this one.  It felt like such a ripoff of all the paranormal YA books out there.  I physically rolled my eyes several times.  It's also one of those books that you know what's going on way before the MC does and it's annoying to no end that they somehow haven't figured it out.  UGH! I read this book last January and I'm STILL annoyed by it.

  • Such a hard decision!!!

Best - Gone Girl or maybe The Shoemaker's Wife

Worse - Eat, Pray, Love. I rated a couple books low (2 stars), but this one "wins" because I went into it thinking I was going to really enjoy it, and then I hated it.

    Books Read in 2014: 10
  • Best - The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Beautiful story. Beautifully written. It made me feel so many things. It's been awhile since a book had that kind of effect on me.

Worst - Grave's End: A True Ghost Story by Elaine Mercado. I read this towards the beginning of the year and can't remember exactly why I didn't like it. I do know that it wasn't what I was expecting and didn't seem to be written very well.

  • Best: Gone Girl, I'd Know You Anywhere, Catch Me by Lisa Gardner, The Ice Cream Girls by Dorothy Koomson & Before I go to Sleep by SJ Watson

Worst: Another vote for Budha in the Attic, The Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes, Salvage the Bones by Jesmyn Ward, & Bound South by Susan Rebecca White

  • 2012 was a year of really great books for me.  I also haven't read as many books in a year since I was in middle or high school.

    Best:

    • The Fault In Our Stars
    • Divergent/Insurgent
    • Stories I Only Tell My Friends
    • The Hunger Games Trilogy
    • Beauty Queens
    • Star Dust
    • We Need to Talk About Kevin
    • Girl Unmoored
    • 11/22/63
    • Shine Shine Shine
    • Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore
    • Ready Player One
    • Watership Down
    • Gone Girl
    • The Girl of Fire and Thorns
    • The Crown of Embers
    • Where'd You Go, Bernadette?

I have many others that I rated as 5 stars, but those listed above are my favorites that will resonate with me the longest and which I will undoubtedly recommend over and over. It doesn't include re-reads (like A Wrinkle In Time, The Hobbit, The Lover's Dictionary) or it might be longer.

    Worst:

    Love, Stargirl

It ruined everything I liked about Stargirl.  It was excruciating.

  • Best: "The Night Circus", I was in love with this book.  The story and imagery still sits with me.

Worst: "The Fault of Our Stars".  I just couldn't wait for this book to be over, and it didn't meet the hype it was getting on NBC.

  • Best:  Insurgent.  I only had five 5-star books but if I had to pick one, this would be it.

Worst: It's sad that I had more 1-star books than 5-star books.  I'm going to go with The True Story of Hansel and Gretel.  Just completely, over-the-top disturbing.

  • Best: The Night Circus, The Game of Thrones books, Bleachers by John Grisham, Marley and Me, and the Divergent series. All of these really held my interest and kept me reading.

Worst: The Shack and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest. While reading both, I was begging for them to just hurry up and be over.....

  • Best-I had 12 5 star books this year. I absolutely love Sarah Jio so The Bungalow is high up there but if I had to choose aside of my favorite author I would have to say Night Road by Kristen Hannah. This book surprised me and I really enjoyed it!

Worst- We Need to Talk About Kevin didn't finish :-(

I get the term "different strokes for different folks" but this is just ludicrous to me.  I've NEVER heard of anyone not enjoying this book, crying their eye sockets out and/or relating to it personally (on and off NBC). May I ask what it was you didn't like? Start a spoiler post if you must.

  • Best: The Fault in Our Stars

Worst: The Fault in Our Stars because it was so good it pretty much ruined me for any other book this year. It's been 12 months since I read it and I still think about it daily.

  • Best - The Poisoner's Handbook (Deborah Blum).  It was an incredibly fascinating history of the development of toxicology.

Worst - The Aqua Net Diaries (Jennifer Niven).  It was a lousy, self-serving memoir by someone who wanted to relive how cool she was in high school.

    - Divergent
