Afternoon tea with neighbor

I'm not sure what to title this so it doesn't sound lame.

I was super close with my neighbors who just sold their house and moved across town.  We've been trying to get together and hang out because we miss each other.

I went over to her house a couple weeks ago at 3:00 pm and she served homemade quiche, ham, biscuits and white chocolate-cranberry cookies.  It was more than a little fabulous!  What should I serve when I have her over?  Quiche is the perfect answer for this type of in between time, so I'm not sure what else to do since she already did it.

Re: Afternoon tea with neighbor

  • I wouldn't expect that much food at that time of the day! How about a hot dip and some assorted crackers or pimento cheese sandwich sliders (either one served with fruit). I have a fabulous hot ham dip recipe (I know it sounds weird but it's DELICIOUS) that would be perfect for something like this.

For sweets, just some simple shortbread cookies (or pecan sandies), or if it's during the week and you need to pick up something, maybe some petit fours.

  • Or, if you do want to go a little more all out, why not do a tea? Could be super fun and girly. Finger sandwiches, pettifours, tiny desserts. I'm kinda loving the idea.
  • I agree that she went over, but I think it would be really fun to recipricate in kind.  I'm liking the idea of little girly bits and bites- a cucumber sandwich (I'd say cucumber topped with salmon, but I seem to recall you have a smoked salmon thing), caprese skewers, fruit skeweres, a bagette with some nice cheese, petit fours or mini something.  mini muffins?
  • Ditto the PP re: fancy tea things.  Very cute. Love 6's Cucumber Sandwich idea.  Am not very refined but I imagine anything you do in miniature would be cute.

Am drawing a blank but please let us know what you do!

Also... are you throwing any of your Christmas/Holiday parties this year?

  • cobb salad, croissants, fruit, brownies

  • I like the high tea idea. Have you ever been to one. I went to one in British Columbia at the Empress Hotel. here is their menu. It may give you some ideas.

    Afternoon Tea Features

    Fresh strawberries with cream

Freshly baked raisin scone with strawberry jam and Empress cream

Smoked salmon pinwheel, mango and curried chicken,

ham and cucumber with tarragon mayo, free range egg salad croissant,

sun dried tomato tapenade on crostini

Lemon curd tartlet, chocolate and pistachio battenburg cake,

sable breton and pear cheese cake, chocolate shortbread,

    Parisian style macaroon

I would do miniature chicken salad sandwiches, fruit with whipped cream or marscapone (sp?), scones or crumpets, and some small dessert item - tartlet, cheesecake bites,...
