worms in puppies

So, remember my friend that took in that chihuahua / pekingese mix? Well, she took the dog to the vet immediately for an exam and shots. The vet gave the pup dewormer then as well as something called Simple Guard 3 which protects against mosquitos, ticks, fleas, etc.

Well today she just called me and noticed this morning that there are grain-sized worms in her poop. She is waiting for a call back from the vet, but was wondering if anyone has dealt with this? Especially after worming? The pup got dewormed last Saturday, so 9 days.

The pup is only 2lbs. TIA!

Re: worms in puppies

  • I'm not an expert or anything but we just also took in a puppy and I have been doing some research. Our vet gave us a dewormer to be repeated every other week for 6 treatments. I believe the dewormer does not take care of the eggs - though I could be wrong - and that is why it is important to repeat.

The grain size could very possibly be tapeworm. We found fleas on our puppy when we gave him a bath the night we picked him up. Tapeworm can come from consumed fleas. We also noticed grain size particles in his stool. We called and they gave us a seperate dewormer (in a pill form) for tapeworm.

  • As the adults die, they come out in the poop.  If they look like rice, they could be tapeworm segments.  Drontal covers tapeworms; not sure if all dewormers do.  However, pp is right - as puppies, they are generally wormed every 2 weeks to continually break the life cycle of the worms (until they are on a HW preventative that covers the most common worms - most don't cover tapeworms - I think only interceptor covers whipworms).  The wormer only kills the adults, so two weeks later, you have to kill the next round of adults from the previous crop of eggs, etc.

The good thing is that if they are coming out in the poop, they are dead/dying.  :)  Just make sure puppy doesn't eat the poop.
  • Thanks ladies. Friend said the worms are moving around and very much alive. Is this a concern?

  • It sounds like tapeworm segments.

Not all dewormers take care of tapeworms so she may have to get another type of dewormer to take care of these.

  • If they look like grains of rice, it is definitely a tape worm. And if the segments are moving after they come out, then it is still alive. The tape worm sheds it's end segments which is what comes out in the poop.

It is possible that she needs a dewormer that is specific for tape worms or a second dose. My pup just had round worms and it took 2 doses to effectively kill them.
