Carpet recs?

We're looking at replacing the carpet in our stairwell that goes down to the basement.  It has 11 steps and a short landing space at the bottom.  I was thinking that maybe we could just purchase some carpet remnants for this, since it's not in  a spot that many guests will see, and I won't be too picky about how it looks.

Does anyone have any recommendations on where to get carpet remnants (I'm in St. Paul but willing to drive 45 minutes or so).  Can this be a DIY install?  We won't need any padding or super nice edges that go under baseboards or anything like that.  Has anyone does this?

Re: Carpet recs?

  • Seestedts in downtown St. Paul used to have a huge remnant room.  Not sure if they do anymore but it would be worth a call.
Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.
  • The Floor Center in Woodbury has a remnant room.  Allied Flooring in South St. Paul usually has some carpet in the warehouse that is discount.

Stairs can be tricky to install. You'll want to make sure they are tight for safety.  There are 2 different ways to install them; cut each individual stair or you can cut a long strip and waterfall them.  You have to use a floor stapler with long enough staples to get them to hold.  DH uses his kicker to kick them tight and then staples with it held in place.  He then trims out the sides.

  • ProSource in Oakdale OR Plymouth.. It's like the Costco of flooring and they have unbelieveable deals. You pay $25 for a LIFETIME membership and that's it... They have a great selection from starter carpet to top of the line. Highly recommended!
