Advice....I need a wee bit of help!

My dad is retiring next week and his office is throwing a huge retirement party for him. Easily 100+ people....and they've asked me to say a little something...

Uh....WTF do I say?

I don't work with him, I'm just his kid, you know?

I'm an only child, and my mom refused to speak. She said she spoke at his "last one" as she keeps calling it...but he's never retired before so she's just talking about when he left a job he'd worked at for 20 years to go to a new one, so IMO that doesn't count.

But my mom also has a terrible cough, and she can't complete a sentence without coughing.

But I thought at least one of us should say something.

So to my original point, WTF do I say?

TIA for the help xoxoxoxo

Re: Advice....I need a wee bit of help!

  • what about talking about how long he has worked for the company, how proud you are of his accomplishments, his inspiration to you, what he plans to do post retirement, etc.

  • That's what I originally thought of...but it's sort of going to be a touchy subject. My dad's boss left, and my dad took over temporarily. He was temporarily in the position for over a year but they refused to make him permanent in that position. They even voted to put the job out for bid and started interviewing.

He went through the interview process, was in the top four but decided he was done and he retired...so I'm a little leery about that part, if that makes sense.

He basically got screwed over so he left. :(

  • Why not talk about how you've always known your dad to be a hard worker, and how the kind of father he has been to you has surely reflected in the work place. Mention that you're proud of all that he's done over the years, that you're sure his coworkers will miss him. Then maybe crack a joke about how now that your dad is retiring, your mom is offering cash rewards for anyone willing to keep him from driving her crazy at home...or something like that.

Keep it short and simple...start with something heartfelt and end with something funny and you've got a winning moment :) good luck Kayla!
