Re: SuBC Ideas

  • i REALLY liked the simplicity of the challenges when we first started doing them years ago such as :read a mystery, read a historical fiction. the IHO are kinda played out imo-they're fun and creative but having one (it seems) for every task it seems is getting old.

    so here's a few:

book that's been on your TBR longest

largest book on your bookshelf at home (or on GR or on ereader)

a book by an author you've read before and liked

    a mystery

    a historical fiction

a book set in the past

a book set in the future

a book recommended to you by a friend or family member

a book on a current best seller list (any list that you can find)

I like all of your ideas and agree with the dittos!  The one thing about the summer reading list is that I think schools around here don't really seem to do that.  I ran into that issue when we did that task a few summers ago. And I mean, I didn't like search every school in the state but I did look at a few from around here and got nothing.  I think I ended up just using the list from someone else.  So maybe if we do that task just word it so that it doesn't have to be local.

    One more I thought of:

Read a book with a state in the title - example Looking for Alaska, Between Georgia, Gods in Alabama.

I know most of the bookstores around here have a "summer reading" table that is filled with books that would typically be on a school's summer reading list. Or maybe some of the NBC teachers or librarians could give a recommendation or make a list for people. Smile

What about just doing a google search for summer reading lists.  It does not have to be your local one.  And we could attach some link suggestions to the bookbio, just like we sometimes suggest books.

Also, I think we did read a book with a city, state, country in the title in the winter.

  • I love all of these ideas!! I kind of fell off participating in the SBC because a lot of the categories were so super specific, I couldnt find a book that interested me enough to read it.

I agree. I have read a lot of books during SBC that don't fit into any of the categories, which is still fine because I don't need to finish the challenge, although I would like to! I do think it's great that the challenges open us up to books that we wouldn't typically read, but getting really specific can be difficult too. I'm pretty sure I never would have picked up The Hunger Games trilogy if the challenge didn't want us to read outside of our typical genres though!

As for SuBC...here are some suggestions:

    * Read a book that you added to your TBR list because you saw a friend reading it on your Goodreads feed (or if you don't have a Goodreads account, then because a nestie posted about it on NBC).

    * Read a book that was released in 2011.

I thought I had more, but everyone already had some great suggestions!

A google search would work too!

And you are totally right about the city/state for WBC.  I just got a book called Georgia Bottoms from the library and right away I thought about this task.  I must have been because we just had it! lol! It is hard to keep track of what we've done already and when!

  • How about read something about your hometown/state.  Maybe about a famous person from there, or about its history.
