Am I wrong?

TriCare has to be in before the 20th for it to be active the next month correct? And who the hell has a 4 week BCT? Something tells me her facts are wrong.

Re: Am I wrong?

  • I was told that the second he steps on the bus for BMT, I'm covered under Tricare.  Yes, I'd have to pay up front b/c I wouldn't be in the system, but I'd be covered.  I didn't use it right away so I'm not sure if this is actually true.
I don't want to be on MSNBC, yo.
  • Once you are in the DEERs system you are covered by Tricare Standard, to be covered by Tricare Prime you must fill out the paperwork--it must be filled out by the 20th of the month to be effective for the next month.

I might be thinking of like...switching from standard to prime, so I could be wrong. I've never had a dependent to worry about, just myself, lol.

And something tells me they are not ready to pay for a labor and delivery out of pocket until TriCare kicks in.

Everything that I've read says that you're automatically enrolled in Standard but you have to get your application for Prime or Prime Remote in by the 20th to be covered the next month.  I think Dental is the same as Prime or Prime Remote

This is what I was told when I signed up a few months ago.  I remember scrambling because the fax machine at J's office was out and I had to go to WalMart to fax my dental coverage paperwork in.

  • I've never been through the enlisting process with a spouse or as a spouse so it beats me. Lol.

  • Being enrolled in DEERS got me Standard, I had to put in the paperwork for Prime. It was no big deal, and I'm not sure when my coverage for Prime was "active." United Concordia was a bit different. We applied for coverage and paid, it was active on the first of the next month.

I *think* you're covered by Standard once you're in DEERS.  I switched to Prime when I moved to MS and that effective date sounds similar to what you're thinking.

I would be freaking out if I was about to have a baby without insurance.  Yikes.  I'm also wholly confused by her 4 week BCT/9 week AIT time line.  Hmm

  • See - I didn't even know Tricare kicked in as soon as H left for basic. I guess I could've used it when we took DS to the ER last month...ugh.

This is totally great to know. We're kicking all the (ridiculously expensive) civilian insurance to the curb at the end of the year, so it's nice to know by what day I have to have the paperwork in for Tricare. Learn something new every day.

It's considered a life changing event so you can drop your expensive civi insurance now if you want.  Assuming you're still within the timeframe to do so.

  • I wonder if she's getting the 4 weeks from when she should get her paperwork? We were told I'd be covered in about 3-4 weeks after he was at boot camp.  I'm not really sure, but her post confused me as well...
  • I just got on Tricare this month.  When we went in to sign me up for Deers Then went to the Tricare office.  I have standard untill the 1st of oct. (you have to get the prime application in by the 20th in order to have insurance by the 1st of the next month on prime). On Oct. 1 I go to Prime insurance.  Dental we had to apply seperalt ybut same you ahve to apply by the 20th of the month in order to get coverage for next month we pay out of pocket but i am not sure how much we pay per month for my dental i know cleanings and one exray per year is covered and then you pay a certain percentage for other things.
  • MH is ARNG so I automatically qualify for standard when his orders are offically cut and they're over 30 days.  However, I can't actually use my tricare until he gets to the 30 day mark, at least that's what I've been told.  So if he was on orders as of 1 October I can't use them til 30 October.

I've never had trouble getting mine to work- I used it more than once while DH was gone this "deployment" and he was barely gone for 30 days.

  • Doucheface was prior service so his BMT was about a month. I don't think his AIT was very long either. But it's been a long time so I don't really remember.

Anyway, yes. Standard is active once you are in Deers. Prime, once you sign up for it, is active the 1st if you sign up by the 20th, or the following first if you don;t.
