Am I feeding him too much?

I'm sure this is the first of many baby questions so please be patient with me...

We're still working on latch and eating at the boob... poor guy just can't seem to get the hang of it just yet.  We're feeding him first at the breast each time, but it's obvious he isn't getting much so he gets a bottle afterward.  Luckily I've been blessed with a healthy supply so we're able to pump a TON to supplement after each attempt.  Little dude is eating at least 3.5/4 ounces at a time... sometimes even 5!  When we only fed him 3 he definitely fussed until he could have more.

Is this too much for him?  He only spits up occasionally but never really pukes so it makes me think he's able to handle it.  True?  I guess I'm not sure how much he should be eating right now, but that sure seems like a lot to me.

And if you have any suggestions for getting his days and nights reversed back to normal that would be appreciated too ;)

Re: Am I feeding him too much?

  • My Ana is a big eater too but over and over I've been reassured that babies won't overeat.

Day/Nights ends up being just an age thing IMO. Give it some time and make sure days are bright, noisy, and sunny and nights are darker and quieter. Pull the shades early if you have to in the evening to signal the start of night time for the little dude.

Nobody said life would be easy. Just that it would be worth it.

  • Supposedly bfed babies cannot eat too much.  That is a lot for Luke's age, but it isn't that much for his size really. Seeing as you gave birth to a 3 month old, I think you are fine!  :)

Lucky you being able to pump so much too, that is seriously a terrific blessing!  Not only can you know exactly how much he is eating, but you can get some help w/ the feedings too - color me jealous!

As far as the days/nights, I think it just takes a little time.  But, like Mrs.Reem said, try to keep him up as much as possible during the day (this wasn't an issue around here as G was up all day crying...)  Also, feed him often during the day, so hopefully he is tanked up and will sleep better at night.

  • I think these ladies said it well.  I wouldn't worry.  And I'm totally jealous of your milk supply.  (Does that sound weird?)  I'm hoping my supply is better with this one than it was with Maya.

  • Nope - you're doing great!  He'll let you know when he's full.  I had a Little Heater, too (99th percentile weight until she was 9 mos), and sometimes we were a bit shocked at how much she could put away!  We never quite got the hang of BFing, either, so the pump was our saving grace - keep it up!

Sounds like you've got a healthy little (?) guy on your hands - Great Job mama! Smile

  • From what I've read you can't overfeed BF babies, so I'm guessing your doing good :-) I can't really give you any help but can say that we're having a hard time with G's BFing and night/day routine so I'm right there with ya!

I hope you don't mind me asking...but I was going to text you anyway. How many times a day do you pump? Since we are bfing/then supplementing with a bottle too I thought maybe you could help. Right now I only do it twice a day (first thing in the am-10oz usually then in the afternoon 6oz usually)-do you do it more to keep your supply up? I feel like mine is lower the last 2 days.

  • WOW...I am so jealous that you girls can pump!  We were just out and about and I had a bottle for Jovie, so I had gone 5 hours without feeding or pumping and I only got 5oz total!!!!  I am super jealous of you girls.

As for nights and days, my girls always had theirs confused at first too.  Usually for about 2 weeks.  What I did that helped was try to keep them up as much as I could, usually that meant hanging out in just their diapers because they hated being nakey!  Worked like a charm :o)  Good luck!

  • Good to know!  I guess we will let him dictate the feedings for now... I will ask during his weigh in on Friday too ;)

Text me ANY time.  Seriously.  It's hard for me to get on the computer but I always have my phone close by ;)

I would like to pump after each breast attempt/feeding but I normally don't :(  Our routine -  I put him on the boob (give him about 15-20 minutes... even though he doesn't do much), then give him a bottle, and try to follow up by pumping.  I would say I'm pumping four+ times a day maybe??  If I don't, my boobs are ROCK hard and painful.

Did they fuss/cry a lot because of this?  I could see how this works but I'd be afraid he'd work himself up if he wasn't wrapped up at least a little :(

They never really fussed at all, they just couldn't sleep like that becausse it wasn't warm or swaddling.  I also had to always get them nakey to feed them otherwise they sleep through feedings.  I wouldn't do it if they were fussy, but it just isn't as comfortable, so they stayed awake!

  • You are not feeding him too much.  It didn't take C long to be drinking 5 oz at each feeding.  Sometimes I think the bigger the baby when they are born, the more they eat/need.  I was almost 12 lbs and I drank 8 oz the first night home from the hospital.

I have no idea how to reverse his sleeping schedule.  C eventually figured it out on his own but it was 4-6 weeks before we could predict his napping/eating schedule enough to feel confident about making plans to go somewhere.

  • You've already gotten great advice, and since he's bigger he'll naturally want to eat more than a 7 lb baby. (By the way, just totally curious, do you know what his gestational age was at birth? Was he a well-cooked baby like mine?)

I HIGHLY recommend contacting a LLL leader or going to a meeting to help with breastfeeding - as a former pumper I know how difficult it can be when they won't/can't latch! I know a couple leaders that are happy to do 'housecalls' anytime, if you would like their contact info.

  • It sounds to me like you are doing great! I have no advice since I had the opposite problem and E was only eating .5-1 oz at a time at that age! Luke has a few pounds on her though! I think what others said sounds like great advice and kudos to you for doing so well on the pumping! That is awesome!
