starting a local book club

I just started a new book club in Nashville, and don't really know where to begin. Does any one have suggestions for reading? We are looking for something everyone can enjoy and nothing really sad or overly sentimental. TIA!

Re: starting a local book club

  • Do you have any favorite authors or books?

    What have you read lately?

  • The books that I have read in my local book club (starting with one in Nashville, no idea if it is still going and now here in Cincinnati) have been The Time Traveller's Wife, The Red Tent, My Sister's Keeper, The Kite Runner, Memory Keeper's Daughter, Wicked, Saving Fish from Drowning, Good Grief, Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons. Check out the BookBio for lots more suggestions.

  • www.readinggroupguides.com is a great website with information on starting a book club, and suggestions on what to read, along with book dicussion guides for many, many books.
  • I joined a local book club recently that I found on Craigslist, and it's been great.  The club had already decided that they weren't going to read any light or fluffy stuff, so the discussions are pretty good.  They read The Road the time before I joined and then Snow Falling on Cedars and Three Cups of Tea.  The are kind of heavier books but it makes for a good discussion.  We have a little bucket where people put in book suggestions with a synopsis of each, and then every month we draw a book - sometimes people have read it or we're just not in the mood for that particular book and we draw another.
