God, I hate to be one of those anti-outsiders people :(

I just see people every day who are hurting bc of this economy. Our state govt is strapped for cash, there are WAY too many people unemployed, and its going to be years before we turn around here.

Not to mention, I see my friends struggling with UE, their spouses laid off, and then to top it all off, MOST of my Nestie Besties who are working are working for much less than they're worth.

So when someone is all "SQUEEE!" I'm moving here for an adventure!" its really frustrating, bc its very likely they will eventually be on public assistance of some kind w/o ever having paid into the system-an added burden for those of us who are contributing.

I hate to be 'that girl', but I'm officially jaded. Seriously-don't move here w/o a job.

  • Don't be jaded.  Remember, they may be moving here from an economy that's worse.  Maybe... ?

Okay, that's me looking on the bright side.

But yes, I know what you mean, especially since DH is STILL out of a job and we're going on 16 months.  It's very scary.  But luckily we have our savings and family to help us.

  • I feel exactly the same say!.  It bothers me to pay like crazy to support other people.  I don't want to support someone who can't keep her legs together and use birth control.  I don't want to support someone who can't hold down a job because they're addicted to drugs.

If it can be an adventure where you're not affecting my life, knock yourself out!  Otherwise I don't want to hear about it.

  • I could have written the same thing.

  • HEY MEANIES....I'M AN OUTSIDER!!! Stick out tongue But you all can't get mad at me...I was warned and knew better...I got a job before I moved here! I didn't even go a week between getting paid out at my old job and starting my new one! No public assistance for me! :)

And DH quit his job to move up here...but he was able to get a temp job w/ VA while he's going to school.

I'll admit...I am underpaid for what I do and took a big paycut to get here. But I knew that would be a part of getting where i wanted to go. But...it works for us and we're happier for doing the move. We love it.

Jeff and I are outsiders, too.  But, we didn't plan to move here until Jeff had a job lined up.  So, like you, we're not taking advantage of other people who live here.  I think that's the real difference and why we've been so warmly welcomed.  Wink

  • LOL, I forgot I was on the Oregon Board...I was wondering where you were from and how bad the UE was there.  Because we have considered moving back home because things here just are taking a toll on us.  We get snooty comments from my SIL about how awful the economy is and that we'll never find jobs.  Their UE is 4%.  I don't think people realize how bad it is here and other places.

Not that 4% is going to mean we'll find jobs there, we are moving for other reasons too.  Mainly because of my father's health and my own.  But it's funny.  I don't think the Midwest got hit hard at all from the economy, it did effect them, but not like here.  They don't have the big companies that do the mass layoffs and all the businesses going under.  They have their own issues though I know.

  • I kid you not, my aunt called me a loser because I won't file for unemployment.  It never even crossed my mind because 1) I left two secure jobs in California to move up here, 2) I knew the job situation when I came up here, and 3) DH makes more than enough to support us.  While I am a proponent for public assistance for those who truly need it (and try to get off it), I am not going to abuse the system "just cuz".  I'd rather be a loser =)

  • I am one of those anti-outsiders...I have lived in Oregon my whole life and in 37 years I have seen Oregon and Portland change in some negative ways....the constant influx of people is changing a lot of the things that makes Oregon desirable....it makes me sad sometimes.
