Question about Dexter

I want to start watching Dexter, but I'm concerned about the killing scenes. Are they graphic? I can handle violence. I just don't do well with gore.

Re: Question about Dexter

  • They don't usually show Dexter actually killing anyone, it's usually left to your imagination. That, or a side shot of blood.

  • I do not do gore. Absolutely not. I don't even like violence that much. But I can watch this show with no problems. The first episode, I'd watch some scenes through my fingers (that's how much I cannot watch gore) until I realized it wasn't bad at all.

  • I have to disagree with the previous posters--- I find that they show a lot of gore.  There isn't often too much violence, but you see a lot of blood and a lot of, not to give too much away, initial stabs.  While you don't see people being cut up step by step, I find it to be quite graphic.

  • I don't watch violent movies at all (even action movies) and yet for some reason I started watching Dexter. Season 1 honestly bothered me quite a bit. It was to the point that I had a couple nightmares. It's certainly creepy. It doesn't have to be even outright footage of a knife cutting flesh, but the whole sterile ritual he has... The other seasons either got less graphic or I got more used to it. I do like the show, despite the disturbing premise.
  • I think it's pretty gory.

It's still a really good show though, so it's worth it if you can get past the gore factor.

  • Going back to the OP's question, the killing scenes are not graphic in the sense that they rarely show the actual act of the person being killed. They tend to pan out and then you see him after he's done. However, Dexter is also a blood spatter analyst and at the scenes of those murders there is a lot of blood. I personally consider gore to be when they show someone being stabbed, cut up or otherwise maimed. In that sense, I don't think the show is gory.

This is what I was going to say.  I would consider other scenes gory though.  It's pretty disturbing sometimes for me.

    I agree with this.

  • I don't think that it's a gory show, but season 4 was a little disturbing.  John Lithgow's acting was incredible, and he really freaked me out.

There is one particular scene in season 4 that is quite violent.  Not to spoil anything, but when Dexter watches John Lithgow's character on the security camera.... woah.

I think Dexter is one of the best shows on TV.

  • *Takes deep breath* I think I'm going to give it a shot. Thanks, everyone!
