Hey Maria! And all that remember the "awful gifts" post a while back...

Remember your vent about MILs crappy gifts a while ago?

Well, I got another bundle-full of crummy clothes again this year from MIL.

One massive green shirt is a size 2XL... One awful, non-stretchy material, kinda silky, but not, purple shirt is a size XL... One beige sweater (FUGLY) is a size SMALL and one grey-striped sweater is a Medium... WTF?!

I was just like "oh... um...ok...um... thnx."  I could tell how embarrassed DH was, so I tried to keep my displeasure to myself.  He received the same kind of crap - something in a 2XL that he literally just gave right to his mom and said "you know I'm not this big; give this to Manoli (his brother)."  Oh, and a massive, brown plaid super-heavy cardigan that he just shook his head at and stuffed back in the box.

My mom and I decided that she shops at flea-markets for all this crap.

Nothing has tags on it... nothing has labels on it (except for the 2XL green shirt - says Daisy Fuentes).  And some of the clothes come in dirty looking plastic bags.

She was also appauled that my mother bought stuff for Mariana - she actually gave me a "pfffff!" when she saw some of the beautful clothes.

Oh, and drumroll, please!  Peter's sister bought me a pilled-up, used black sweater (no labels, no tags) and bought Peter a 6 pack of black socks....

 Any insight?  Anyone?

Receiving all this crap drives me nuts because then I have to figure out how to get rid of it without offending DH... I know he's mortified by the whole situation.

Sorry this turned out to be so long!

  • wow!  Luckily my MIL is pretty good about picking out sweaters for me if she does clothes at all.
  • Wait until she starts buying the baby stuff.  Oh I can't hardly wait for those posts... My friend got a ton of used DIRTY baby stuff from one of her H's family members.

  • Why can't she at least be consistent with the incorrect sizing?  Clearly someone who fits in a S in one sweater isn't going to fit into a 2XL in another.  I've got nothing in terms of advice on this one.  GL!
  • oh. em. gee.

I thought MY MIL was bad... sheesh!!

  • Okay, I really want to see pictures of this stuff!  Maybe you guys can attend like 10 white elephant exchanges next year?

This.  Would DH be offended if you just donated it all?

  • Boy, these gift sound as bad as the gifts that my mom and her sisters used to get from their step mother.  I remember this grape pitcher, pea coffee cups, a few see through shirts, etc.  I think that I would simply stick your gifts in the the Big Sister's bin next time I see it.

Picture this girls, I got the game of Life for 20 years in a row from the same person.

    What????

  • OMG!! 2XL for your little frame?  Maybe she thought you could use it as a maternity shirt!  haha.

Not sure how to handle this so she purchases more appropriate gifts next year, but the stuff you got now would definitely go directly to the donation bag if it were mine!

  • Bj's grandmother bought a 2009 Mercedes last month and gave BJ 3 pairs of white starter socks for Christmas.  His mom got me 2 shirts, one thats not my size (she even said I know this isn't your size...) and a shirt thats totally FULGY and not my style, its her style, i opened it and she made a comment about borrowing it.....

    STFU!  Who would do that?!

I don't want to offend DH any worse (not that I did the initial offending) by blatently donating any of it which left me in kind of a stuck situation...

BUT, I did talk to my mom and she said next time she's here, she'll discreetly slip the clothes into her luggage and donate them herself.

Such BS and such a friggin' hassle to get all this crap!  I really wish she wouldn't buy us anything; especially if we can't return...

  • There might be a way to politely deal with this. One thing would be to have your DH talk to your mom and tell her something like "we liked the gifts, but they didn't fit.  Maybe next time we can e-mail you some ideas with our sizes". Or something like "We already have so much clothes, but we could really use XXX (something cheap since it sounds like she probably isn't raking in the dough, like books). OR, somehow get it so that you do something like go out to dinner as a gift instead of material things. I think it's best for your DH to do this though.  My DH has stopped my MIL from buying me things, although one of the things was something he told me about that I actually did want - a fondue pot would have been fun!

  • I think you either need to suggest not exchanging - or start a new tradition of exchanging gift cards... I can't believe the crap she gives you guys.... At least you can always donate it to a local shelter, etc.
  • Ya know what sucks, guys?  I feel awful bringing this up to DH... I don't want him to be any more embarrassed than he already is...

I don't mean to sound ungrateful either =(  I would rather her keep her money than buy us these insulting gifts.  The most f'ed up part of this whole thing is that THEY HAVE MUCHO DINERO!

Guys, they own 3 apartment buildings 5 mins from Manhattan... they've got a sh!tload of income.  I'm not saying they have to spend that money on us, but I am saying their "gifts" create such a burden because we (I) have to figure out how to get rid of them.

So frustrating...  I am going to *try* to ask DH to suggest giftcards to them.. that was a good idea, love, thanks!

  • OMG! I'm sorry, but I'm picturing you opening these gifts and its freaking hilarious! If it were me I'd just bag them up and drop them off at a shelter. Luckily my DH doesn't pay much attention so he wouldn't even know they were gone. If he ask I just play dumb and say "hum...I thought they were here somewhere" ;)

  • oh man....I'm sorry, but I giggled a little (okay maybe a lot) at the thought of you guys opening those gifts. I don't have any new advice for you, I like the gift card idea. I really hope you can figure something out b/c it sounds like a real PITA
