kitchen cabinates

Hi all,

We're in the planning phase of a kitchen remodel and are trying to determine what type of cabinets to look for.   Unfortunately, cabinate refacing is not an option.

What type do you have in your homes (i.e. wood (if wood, what kind), laminate, etc and brand name if you know).  Also pros or cons of the cabinets you have or what you would want.

Re: kitchen cabinates

  • We did a kitchen remodel about 2 years ago.  We got KraftMaid cabinets.  They are great (as great as cabinets can be I guess - we haven't had any problems with them).  We got them through the Jae Company on 5th Ave in Grandview, but I know Lowes and Home Depot also carry them.  They are cherry wood.

When we were looking at cabinets, the soft close drawers was something that we thought was neat, but didn't think it was worth the expense.  Since then, my husband found hardware to make our drawers soft close and we just love them.  I definitely recommend the soft close drawers.

  • Hah!  Just re-read my post and saw all my typos for cabinets.  Sorry, that's what happens when you have an over-reliance on spell check ;)

Again, thanks for the help with the cabinet info!

  • My MIL has Kraftmaid in her kitchen and while they are very nice, it was pretty expensive.  We did a minor remodel a couple of years ago and we used the stock cabinets at Lowe's in Natural Maple (there are pics in my bio).  I like them and since they offer a free design consult if you bring in the measurements we knew we had all the right cabinets.
  • Kitchen cabinets & countertops are what I do so ask away any questions you may have! I am very familar with the following lines:

Merillat Masterpiece and Cross Creek (at Lowes) is the same thing as Kraftmaid. And Thomasville available at Home Depot is the same as Aristokraft. Kemper/Diamond/Schrock are also all the same, just different names.

What is popular now is Maple with glazing or Maple that is painted. Many cabinet lines have Maple door styles that are stained reddish to look like cherry so it gives you the cherry look without the cost of cherry.

Also something that is extremely popular is dovetail drawers. They have great resale value and many people see this as a sign of a quality cabinet. Almost all lines will have this option, and many have this as a standard specification.

Let me know if I can answer any questions, or give you information on places to go!
