What to Wear to FL Wedding

I'm going to my first wedding in FL in May & I'm wondering how people dress for weddings down here? I'm originally from RI where everyone wears cocktail dresses, usually dark colors or black no matter what time of year. If I did that would I stick out like a sore thumb? If I wore more of a light colored sundress would I look to casual? It's at the Van Wezel in Sarasota if that helps. Thanks!

  • Van Wezel - Pretty :)

What time is the wedding?  Cocktail is fine, but black for a noon wedding can be a little much.  But really you wouldn't stick out unless it was velvet.  May will be HOT.
  • I would say that a black cocktail dress would be perfect.

  • The Van Wezel is the fanciest concert hall in Sarasota, which is the fanciest, richest town on the West Coast.  Unless the is a daytime wedding, wear a cocktail dress.

  • You certainly won't stick out in black, but I think Floridians take more liberties with color and it might be fun for you to do that if you don't normally get to. But if you don't want to buy anything new, a black dress would be fine for an evening event (assuming it is not on the beach or outdoors). HTH
  • I think dressier is almost always better.  However, you're right to think that people in Florida can be a little more casual.  At my "Black Tie Optional" wedding, several Floridian girls showed up in super casual white sundresses... even after asking what they should wear.  My relatives from Texas were shocked and appalled, but I've seen similar situations numerous times down here (jeans at the orchestra, shorts at evening weddings, bathing suits in nice restaurants).  I'd say, dress in a way that would make you the most socially comfortable and come prepared to see a little of everything :)

  • Thanks ladies, it's at 6pm so I will go with one of my black or brown cocktail dresses!
  • We encouraged people to wear sundresses to our wedding. My family from IL wore hawaiian style shirts. I liked that it wasn't too formal. But it depends on the location.
