who do you think it will come down to in the GOP nom

Isn't the next debate this Thurs?  I'm thinking the GOP nomination will come down to Cruz and Trump.  Which one do you favor if any?  Regarding the DNC nom I'm still undecided on which one I think will get that.

  • I will not vote for Trump or Cruz. The Dems don't really have better choices. I would vote for Bloomberg though. So for that to happen Trump and Bernie need the nominations

    I hear ya there.

  • I think (sadly) that in the end, it will be Trump. As a psychology graduate student, I see a whole lot of reasons why he has gotten to where he is. I also think this is a huge mistake on the part of the American people and will do nothing but make us an international laughing-stock.

When it comes to voting, if the race is close, I will vote Cruz solely as a vote against Trump. If it's not close, I'll probably vote for Rubio or Christie if he is still in it. I don't like Cruz, though and I think he presents a type of phony Christianity that bothers me.

  • I saw something the other night at my ILs on Fox News.

They pointed out that everybody forgets that in 2012, it was Huckabee that won Iowa and in 2008 Santorum won Iowa, or maybe it was the other way around with Santorum in 2008 and Huckabee in 2012.

Either way, it's significant. Neither of them was in the top of ANY of the polls at the time. They were both major underdogs, but they pulled ahead in Iowa. Now, obviously they did not win subsequent states or the overall GOP nomination.

However, with this campaign cycle being so up in the air, we may not see Cruz or Trump win Iowa. And, with so many people being watchful for how this will play out, it's possible that non-Cruz and non-Trump votes in Iowa will sway SC and/or NH.

I did not realize this about 2008 and 2012 until the other night and it gives me hope for the early voting states.

I agree as well. Trump has been so far above everyone thus far in the campaign and I think he will continue to do so.  I don't like Cruz either.  If it came down to trump vs bernie or trump vs hilary I just don't know.  My in laws HATE trump and they are very R and so is DH yet DH is now liking Trump and says I will too eventually.  I don't think so.  I've watched a video where a former Dem is very much for Trump because she believes he will make america great again.

  • Me too. I can not stand Hillary.

Trump supports the "mad as hell" group-Democrats and Republicans. Yes, there are a lot things to be angry about, but the problem with that is, anger will get us nowhere. I feel like Republicans are mad about Obama's abuses of power, but rather than wanting to vote someone in who will not abuse power, they are just going to vote in Trump who will be their version of Obama.

I think that if it was Trump vs. Hillary, I would just not vote. Trump vs. Bernie...not sure. I think that most of the stuff Bernie wants to do is just not going to happen. I just won't vote for Trump no matter what.

Trump disgusts me.  I can't even talk about him being the nom.  It infuriates me.  Feels like the sky is falling.

He's skipping the Fox News because Fox News refuses to replace Meghan Kelly.  Good for them.  She didn't ask him any questions that he hasn't been asked in other debates.  She just isn't kissing his ass like the rest of the Fox News people.  In fact, she insinuated that he tried to buy her and she won't be bought.  He likes to sensor the media, but Fox News refused to be bend to his will and be manipulated like ABC did when they dropped the Union Leader (the major NH newspaper) after Trump threatened to not participate in their debate next week after the Union Leader endorsed Christie (they always endorse a candidate before their sponsored debate)

I heard this - I didn't even know you could skip a debate.  I already heard Ted Cruz speaking about how if Trump wins Iowa there is a very good change he could be the GOP nominee.  Question for you - if Trump is the nom. would you still vote R?  I think there are a lot of Rs that probably would that don't really care for Trump like my in laws.

I probably won't vote.  Or I'll vote third party.  Gary Johnson is running I heard.

A debate is an invitation, not a summons.  He'd be stupid not to go.  I think it's an empty threat.
  • ^^^I agree. He'll go. Rand Paul looked like a martyr for the last debate, but I don't think it would have the same effect for Trump. Would it have a huge effect on his polls? - probably not...nothing seems to effect those. Speaking of which, did you hear Trump said that he could shoot someone in the middle of NYC and not lose voters? More disgust.

I heard him say that about Iowa - He's getting a tad cocky I think.

  • i have heard that.  I don't know, I think he'll weigh which option is best for him.  If he doesn't go, his supporters will spin this into that he's "standing up to the liberal media", when in fact, all he's doing is undermining freedom of the press.

What is his OBSESSION with Meghan Kelly?

That's what I mean that no matter what he does, it doesn't affect him. His supporters find a way to spin everything he does. They'll say that he's standing  up to the liberal press...but come on! Fox News liberal press? Really?

In the end, I think Trump will show. In the past debates he has threatened to boycott if the networks didn't pay him more or drop news outlets that didn't support him. This is really about Fox News being the first to stand up to him and telling him what he's doing is NOT OK. I really hope people still watch the debate without Trump. I certainly will and it will be interesting to see what a GOP debate would have been like if this nightmare had never started.

I will watch it either way.  Personally I got dibs on him not showing up.

Granted, I do fairly minimal reading about the candidates outside of this forum, but what is the deal with Biden?  It seems like there has been a lot of talk from the get go that he might be running, but if he is going to run, wouldn't he have already announced it?  I've just figured he isn't going to run.

Not completely sure, but I think it's because Hillary is dropping in polls and Sanders is rising. But the weird thing is, that I don't think Sanders is rising because everyone wants Sanders. Sanders is rising because no one wants Hillary. I think people still throw Biden in the conversation because they wish they had someone to pick from that wasn't a social extremist or a dirty rotten liar. In the end, I don't think the Democratic options aren't much better for registered dems than Republican options for registered Repubs.

This.  I believe that he may somehow come in at the last minute if hillary were to drop out.  He would be a more moderate option than Sanders.  I'm not really inspired by either side right now.

  • Biden announced a couple of weeks or months ago he wasn't running because he was still mourning the loss of his son and was out of time to get a campaign together. Bloomberg would be using a billion (yes with a b) dollars of his own money so he wouldn't need to spend time fundraising. The moderates in the middle, like me, really need another candidate.
  • I get why it's a big deal if he runs- because no one likes the current candidates and he's gotten popular being the VP, plus he'll have the Obama machine backing him.  I don't get why anybody thinks he's that great though.  He's run for president tons of other times and no one cared.  He wasn't very good then, why now?

    I'd possibly vote for Bloomberg.

I don't think he's great but better than the 2 possibilities they have now. Btw I heard rand Paul was back in for tomorrow night. Looking forward to a somewhat normal debate.

I didn't think so either. Rand Paul skipped one too. He refused to be on the small stage or something.
  • I would like to see Carly Fiorina or Marco Rubio win the nom. All the dems are nuts! I would not vote democrat anyway. I feel we are less safe under a democrat rule.

I really like Ben Carson but not sure how he'd do as president.

At this point #anyonebutTrump  But seriously, I would be thrilled if it was Rubio.  Love Fiorina, but she's not going anywhere fast.  I'd love to see her with a cabinet position.

If Trump is showing up, but Rand Paul is in, I'm looking forward to this debate!  Maybe they can actually discuss some real issues instead of dealing with the sideshow act.
  • @catsareniice1 - your statement about being less safe under Democrat rule is interesting. Isn't the whole point of the Constitution that we are not under anyone's rule? This is the big problem I see with both Obama and with Trump. Both of them act like, as President, they are in charge. Congress is just a roadblock that doesn't seem to agree with the king. At the end of the day, no matter who it is, I want someone who will act like the President is supposed to act, as outlined by the Constitution-someone who will work with Congress and with the Supreme Court.

@BlueBirdMB - I have this cynical feeling that all the candidates are going to do is complain and attack Trump, which will only solidify Trump's base support. It's pretty clear to me that none of the other candidates nor the NRC ever took a college Social Psychology class.

It's a fine line.  They can't completely ignore the elephant in the room, but they can't harp on it either.  They need to address it to a point.

Also I completely agree about the limitations of the executive branch.  I think it's something that several presidents in a row have undermined and I'm tired of it.  We have a balance of power that requires people to get along and work things out together.  I firmly believe that power corrupts.  I fear that type of power from a Republican or a Democrat equally.
