Chili "Cook Off"

Last year hubby's fire station had a friendly competition against the police in a chili cook off. The town was invited to come "judge" the different recipes. Each fire fighter and police officer came with his/her own recipe (in some of the cases the wives recipes, lol).

DH and I had so much fun (and our recipe came in second place overall, woo!) that we wanted to host our own chili cook off against some of our friends and family.  So I was trying to think of what "extras" to include, such as cheese, tortilla chips, bread, and maybe even fries and/or hot dogs.

What kind of things do you all use with your chili? Should I have any "sides" included? And what about appetizers?

Re: Chili "Cook Off"

  • I went to a neighborhood chili cook off at my BIL's last year.  The only apps were chips, pretzels, and dip.  No point in filling up on appetizers since the chili is the main point, and there were multiple chilis to sample.

Everyone was requested to bring a card which described their chili, and that was placed next to their specific crock pot.  There was a 'fixings' station set up too, which included shredded cheese, sour cream, sliced avacado, and torilla chips.   There was your basic beef chili, white chicken chili, and vege chili.

Looking back, the appetizers weren't missed.  As for the pretzels and chips, they were nibbled on through out the party.  It was hosted during a baseball game, and the game was played out back on a projector screen.

  • I love this idea; I may steal it :)

I'd have crackers, cornbread muffins, cheese, sour cream, jalapeno peppers, diced onions, and corn chips on the side. You could do mini grilled cheeses if you wanted to, and hot dogs would be a great addition. I don't think you'd need apps beyond maybe some nuts, chips or pretzels, or a snack mix. Do s'mores for dessert if you can, just to add to the cozy cool weather atmosphere.
