Ladies--What did you do with your ring?

Morning all!

I was wondering what you all did with your engagement/wedding rings after your divorce. My beautiful ring is just sitting in my jewelry box. My sister thinks I should make it into earrings or another ring. But I am not sure how I would feel wearing that. I'm wondering if I should just sell it.

 Thoughts?

Re: Ladies--What did you do with your ring?

  • I can't speak for anyone else, but once our divorce was finalized, I sold my rings, and every other piece of jewelry he gave me over our 9 years together.

  • I sold them. Truthfully, I left the divorce with practically nothing and I needed the cash to furnish an apartment. If I didn't need the money, I probably would have made them into another piece of jewelry.

  • The stone used for my engagement ring was a nice large stone that my grandmother had in a diamond solitaire pendant.  So it was 'my' stone, not his or even 'ours' since it was from my grandmom.  I had it removed from my engagement ring and made into a right hand 'cocktail' ring with smaller diamonds around it.  I love it.

  • I sold mine and put the $ in savings.

  • Sold mine on Craigs List. Actually used it to put a nice down payment on a new car :) I look sooo good driving in it now. The hell with the ring that would have just sat in my jewelry box collecting dust.
  • I still have them but I want to sell them, I am just not sure where!

  • I put mine into a pendant, which I wear.   I will give to DD when she graduates from college.

  • I left mine on his dresser when I moved out. That is something I now kick myself about :-/

  • I sold mine.

I'm still amazed that you guys got enough money from your rings to put down payments on cars and furnish apartments.

  • I gave mine back to him. The main stone in it had belonged to his mother. As much as I would have loved to have sold it and kept the money, it was a family heirloom for them and it didn't seem right to do so.

I am beginning to think I am way too nice.

  • I actually lost mine about a year before we split it. If I hadn't, I totally would have sold them.

  • Uhhh, I was going to sell mine and I had it in my purse because I was talking about how much I could get for it with one of the advisors at my firm who deals in gold/silver.  I got into an argument with XMIL and she kept ranting and raving about me giving her the ring back.  When I asked WHY I would give HER the ring back she said "because I paid for it and it's still on MY CC".  With that I took the damnn ring out of my purse and practically threw it at her.  I was so disgusted that he hadn't even paid for the thing himself and that it wasn't even paid off after 3.5 years of marriage.

It was just further proof of how much for show XH really was.  He made sure that he got a huge rock, but he couldn't even afford it to begin with.  I felt sick that I wore that thing during our marriage and had no clue of the story behind how he got it.

I feel the same way. It turned out that XH's sister worked at a jewelry store and he bought the ring from her. But the bad part is that he had already proposed to the girl he was dating before me with the same ring! And she wore it until they broke up. I find this out after we get divorced. Makes me sick that I wore it the whole time like an idiot!

  • I pawned mine.

  • Sold them. :-) They weren't big, but I was able to buy me a couple of nice outfits.
  • I am in the process of trying to sell mine.  I won't get any more than $200 - $300 for it, but I don't want it.
  • I'm curious, for those of you who sold yours, how did you go about selling?  Do you feel that you got a fair amount?

I've been considering selling mine vs keeping for DD.
  • Right now I can't imagine selling mine.  I will probably hold onto it.  Maybe I will give it to my daughter or maybe I will have the stones removed and put into a different setting.  At this point I don't know but for now I am keeping it.

  • We both sold our rings, exchanged receipts to divide it equally and each opened up a 529 College Savings Plan for our daughter.

  • If you have a kids(s) take the set and have something made for them, either a pendant, earrings, a ring, etc. Because no matter how bad things got, your children are something positive that came from that marriage, so why not pass it onto them in a different form. If you don't have kids, consider going to a jewelry store that takes trade ins. My husband had his ring from his first marriage when we got together, mainly because he couldn't get a good price on it for just selling it. When he went to get my engagement ring, they took his wedding band as a trade in and gave him a much higher value then just selling it to the store. So maybe take the set and trade it in for something else that you would like to have like earrings or necklace with your birthstone or something.

  • I still have mine, I wear it on my right hand occasionally.  I don't think I will ever sell it.
