Shipping furniture overseas - any experience?

I'm seriously considering getting a La Z Boy over here and shipping it to Germany since I haven't been able to find anything satisfactory over there (I'm looking for something that reclines and, when it's not reclined, rocks). I know some of you have shipped some furniture on your own to other locations - if I decide to do this, how much money are we talking about? Obviously you can't give me an exact number, but I don't even know whether we're talking in the neighborhood of $100 or $1000 for a piece of furniture like that.

Re: Shipping furniture overseas - any experience?

  • This site says about $500 plus $200+ fees at the receiving terminal assuming it only weighs 150 pounds.

  • Thanks. That at least gives me a rough idea.

  • Did I tell you about my experience with the rocking chair for the nursery?  $600 chair from Pottery Barn, $1000 to ship it with the shipping company we used TWICE to ship furniture- once a 20 ft. container, and once a partial container.  The chair entered the EU in Amsterdam, and customs wanted to charge us 400 Euro!  We were lucky to have friends working for customs in Nuertingen, but still had to pay 100 Euro.  So, my nursery chair ended up costing about $1700!

If you ship furniture, the easiest and cheapest way to go is a 20 ft. container you load yourself.  You need a few strong men, because usually when you load yourself, the container comes on a truck, and stays on the truck while you load it, and you don't get any special equipment to load.  But, you are still playing a game with customs, unless you can ask the shipping company specifically to have your stuff enter the EU through a certain port.  The UK is the easiest to get away with not paying customs.  I was told by the shipping company that Amsterdam was easy too, but with the total they wanted for one chair, I'm not really sure that Amsterdam is that easy.   Technically, you are responsible to pay the VAT on the chair (even if you pay sales tax in the US) and customs charges, nevermind any additional port fees, if your item gets held up in customs (which it will.)

  • Blah. :-/ Thanks for the info! I did a little more research yesterday and am now hopeful that I might actually be able to get a La Z Boy or similar recliner/rocker from the UK. We'll see.

And I get really upset about the whole having to pay VAT even on the US sales tax. How can they tax my tax??!!? When I brought my laptop in a few years ago and it was going to be a close call with coming in under the 430? limit, I was muttering to DH that if they made me pay customs just because they added on the amount of tax I paid in the US, I was going to argue it in court. I doubt I would have, but luckily our guy didn't seem to know how to read a US receipt and just looked at the price of the computer before tax to compute whether we needed to pay German VAT.
