Raw is a hit!

I'm now trying to give them one fully raw meal a week (meat, a little veggies, a tablespoon of pumpkin) and the LOVE it. Tonight they got turkey and I just gave them a little because they've never had it before (outside of kibble) and they were begging for more.

Also- SO little poo after raw meals!

I need to do more research to get ideas of what to give them, and how much, but I'd really like to continue to give them raw instead of only cooked meat. I really do wish I had the space to do it more often, but once a week is better than nothing, right?

BTW- cutting up raw turkey is WAY less gross than raw beef

Re: Raw is a hit!

  • I never had any doubt.  My dog loves food in general but flips for raw.

  • I am glad they like it! Our cats lurve their raw.  Hopefully other dog moms can chime in, because I think you aren't supposed to feed kibble and raw because it takes different times to digest.

Have you joined any raw feeding forums on yahoo?  You may be able to find a supplier through there.  We found one through a therapy pet group we used to belong to, and they place an order every 3 months.  We order mostly ground stuff because it is easier for us, but the nice thing about dogs is that you can feed larger meals, so it may be less prep than for cats.

ETA:  Our cats go insane for gizzards.  You'd think every time they have them it is the greatest day of their lives.

I'm not feeding raw and kibble together- raw gets a full meal, no kibble for 12 hours (I think that was what was suggested here). This is okay, right? If not, I will give them cooked meat, but I was hoping they would get a chance to just enjoy it. I will look into some of the raw forums.

I mean, the usually gobble their food, but this is drooling while I'm cutting it up lurve

  • I feed my Dobie an all raw diet with a tad bit of kibble.  He gets 2lbs of raw beef or beef organs that's already ground up from the supplier and half a cup of kibble a day.  The kibble is Orijen's Fish with salmon in it.  The fish helps keep his coat nice and shiny.  His chew toy is also raw :P

My dog is allergic to birds so I can't feed him chicken or turkey or his skin will break out. I found out that a lot of dogs are allergic to birds so keep an eye out for that.

It's so much better for their diet and shouldn't be that much more trouble than simply putting a cup of kibble in their bowl.  You should see about finding a supplier.  I get ours from Blue Ridge Beef but I think they are only in FL, NC, SC, and GA.

Waiting a while before feeding kibble again is good, but I'm not sure how long is "ideal."  Just an FYI, the cat forums are VERY pro raw, but I am not sure about the dog ones.  People are helpful, but there are a lot who think kibble is the devil.

I love the people who call kibble "death nuggets.". They kill me.

Id be fine with one raw meal and one kibble meal.  But if it is 50% of their diet, do make sure they're getting an appropriate mix of meat, bone, and organ.  And if you hate cutting up raw beef, try freezing it partially first. It's less icky that way.

Posting and running, sorry! I'm glad they're taking to it so well! I love the above linked forum because there is a little of everyone on there; some kibble feeders, BARF, PMR, mixed (like you) and everyone is really nice and knowledgeable.

  • We considered raw and ruled it out for now. We're currently feeding TOTW. I would love to supplement with a raw meal once a week. I'll have to look more into. Definitely keep us posted on how this works out for you!
