50th Birthday Party

I am throwing a surprise birthday party for my MIL.  The party is in December.  I am going to do Christmas balls in a glass hurricane as centerpieces.  Do you think this will be ok since it is a birthday party but in December?  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Re: 50th Birthday Party

  • Lots of December babies don't like having Christmas related parties... but I don't know your MIL. ?

I agree!  My b-day is Dec. 7th and my sis' is Dec. 26- after years of having our b-days associated with C-mas, we're over it!  I think something winter-themed (blue and silver) would be better if you want to do something seasonal in terms of decorations.

  • I'm throwing a surprise 50th for my MIL in December as well and we're trying to eliminate the Christmas theme all together.

We want to focus on the birthday part.

  • I think would look great!  While I understand the birthday/Christmas issue, it is what it is.  I mean seriously, are you also supposed to make sure that there is no Christmas tree in your house, no Christmas lights, no other Christmas decorations???

If you were really worried about it, then add in some very traditional birthday options.  Some suggestions are: make/buy a birthday sign, have birthday plates/napkins/cups, have her wear a special tiara/shirt, have a BIG birthday cake, ect.

  •  northamarack- that's true.  if your having it in a home, eliminating x-mas altogehter would be really difficult.

  • I don't think you should eliminate Christmas completely, but I would try to make the party more birthday themed than Christmas themed. So I'd say nay on the christmas ornament decorations.

I'd love to see what you choose and let us know if you need any other help planning.

I agree.  We are having a birthday banner, huge birthday cake and birthday beverage napkins.  I just don't want to do the traditional flower thing because she doesn't really like most flowers and I didn't want to do balloons.  I thought this would be a nice touch.  Thanks.

  • Are you holding this at a restaurant/banquet hall? Is it some place that you'll need many centerpieces?

I think it might be fun to do a spin on a candy bar and maybe get three different sized vases or hurricanes and fill them with different kinds of candy.  At the end of the night everyone can take something from them. You might be able to find cute inexpensive decorative boxes for people to fill up with the treats.  You can also place a few votives around it.

Maybe something similar to the candy on the left hand side of this picture:
