Visiting Indianapolis

Hello!

I will be visiting Indianapolis for a work conference at the end of March. I am staying at the Westin. I hope to have a little fun while I am there too! :)

-Will I need a rental car?

-Are there certain things I must see before I leave?

-Can you recommend some nice restaurants?

Thanks in advance!

Re: Visiting Indianapolis

  • If your conference is downtown, then no. A cab from the airport to downtown would probably be about $20 or $25 each way.

There are some really fun things to see downtown, including the Zoo, Indiana State Museum and the White River Gardens. I wouldn't rent a car to do just this, but the Indianapolis Motor Speedway is pretty incredible to see. It is about a 15 min drive from downtown, and not a safe area to walk from downtown to there.

Some of my favorite downtown restaurants are:

Rock Bottom Brewery (not fancy, but good yummy pub food)

Bazbeaux Pizza on Mass Ave. Voted best pizza in Indy for several years! And the Mass Ave area is a fun place to walk around too.

Nicky Blanes is my favorite martini bar in the city. There is cigar smoking permitted in there--though it is decently ventilated.

St. Elmo's is one of the very nicest steak houses in the city, though worth every penny. The shrimp cocktail is legendary there too!

Have a very safe and fun trip to Indy, I hope this helps!

  • I agree that there is no need to rent a car.

http://www.scottysbrewhouse.com/ is one of my favorites downtown.  I am in love with their loaded tater tots.  Its not a fancy place but wonderful food that is always good.  Its only a few blocks away.

If you go to Mass Ave then you need to try out Yogulatte. the yogart is one of my favorites.

  • It looks like you are a teacher?!  If you sign up in advance the Indianapolis Children's Museum will be free for you and one other person.  Trust me, it is the greatest Children's Museum.  My students really love it and it is fun just to go with friends as a grown.  Have fun!  :)

  • If you're into quirky artsy places, go to Fountain Square.  Check out the Fountain Square Theater Building and take a tour.  Go duckpin bowling. Go to the antique mall and the vintage clothing shops there.  If you are big-time antique shopper, be sure to check out Midland Arts and Antiques.  It's about a ten minute drive from Fountain Square.
