Trip to He!! and Back

I thought I would type this once.  You don't have to comment but I know some of you like to hear about my ILs.

Christmas Eve, Bill told his dad that we had saved Rascal and his mom happened to hear his dad say something about the new cat's name.  Well, she got on the phone and, according to Bill, became partially unhinged.

Well, Christmas Day went very well.  Up until Bill finally told his dad (and only his dad) that we weren't staying with them.  His dad cooked for us and we had moderately normal salads (still with pears and apples and kiwis on iceberg and the ranch dressing--the only dressing--was expired by a month).  His parents gave me some really nice A&M note cards and a gift card to Maggiano's (was totally shocked by this as they don't like giving or getting gift cards).  His sister gave me "The Help" on DVD and as a book (I do already have a copy of the book but that's okay, it was nice that she put a little more thought into my gift).  His brother gave me a William-Sonoma cookbook "Essentials of Baking".  It looks great.  Bill's dad chastised the both of us for not telling him.  I kind of agree however, they have never wanted to talk to me on the phone.  I guess I should have done it since Bill just couldn't but I would never ask him to tell my dad difficult news unless it was of the Julie-is-dead variety.  They still haven't indicated that they really want to have a deeper relationship than we already have.  According to Bill, they were all pretty surprised that I was coming to Christmas this year.

The next morning went okay until MIL and I were in the kitchen alone putting up soup and she told me "We could have been friends".  She and Bill apparently had a conversation while I was out with FIL getting movie tickets (a not so bad experience actually, a very nice discussion) and she decided that I am too strong willed for Bill.  So, we apparently can not ever be friends since we stayed at a hotel.  Never mind the fact that she said what she did after my mom's funeral and friends generally call each other by their first names (I still have not yet been invited to call them by their first name).  Friends also give each other their phone numbers (I only have my FILs phone number).  I told Bill that I was actually not under the impression that she and I would ever be friends due to past events.

All in all, in spite of the major issue Christmas night, it was probably the best visit we had.

  • Wait, "the major issue Christmas night" - what happened?  I'm glad it went more smoothly than you expected!

Bill never told them that we weren't staying with them.  His dad was a little miffed (and he should be--Bill should have told them) and said that one of us should have told them.  I was a little worried how his mom would act the next morning.  FIL took me with him to pick up movie tickets and milk so Bill and MIL could have some alone time but she kind of ambushed me in the kitchen when we came back when she said "We could have been friends."

  • Oh, ok, I got confused.  But seriously, based on what you've said before, you couldn't really have been friends, so I'm glad their reaction to the hotel wasn't worse!

... Um, wtf? Daniel's family always assumes I'm always going to be there unless I say otherwise.

  • Ooh, you are a far more controlled person than I am.

When ambushed in the kitchen, I would have let her have it.   "You know, we COULD have been.   If you had ever made any kind of effort to make me feel welcome in your home, much less your family... then maybe things WOULD have been different."

    This!

  • I think the reason that I haven't said anything yet is because I always feel like I'm ambushed.  She wouldn't say that in front of Bill (about us being friends) but she waited until we were alone.  And, no, I don't think we'll ever be friends.
