Updated: If anyone's around and could spare some PR T&P...

I just got a text about 1/2 hour ago from my dad that they were the emergency vet with their golden retriever Riley.  When I finally got a hold of them 15 minutes later and asked what happened, this is what the text said, "He was just standing in the livingroom & started bleeding from his side.  It was watery blood.  They think an abcess ruptured."

As I am typing this, my dad just sent me another text thats says, " They now   think he may have been bitten by something.  There's some acute tissue necrosis at the site."

Please send any spare T&P you have to Riley and my parents.  Also, if any of you know anything about this kind of thing, please share.  I don't have a clue, and I'm a little scared since I'm not there.

Thanks!

ETA: Dad just said it might've been a spider bite?  But that there are other possibilities.  He said he'll keep us posted.

  • Update: Talked to my mom.  They don't know what it is.  The vet listed a few things that they thought it could be (a bb gun shot, a snake bite, a jab from a stick), but he's never left alone in their (fenced in) back yard-at the least, they stand at the sliding glass door and watch him the whole time- so they feel like they would've noticed one of those sooner and the wound doesn't seem to exactly match any of those options.

The vet is sending him home with heavy doses of antibiotics (But thankfully he is going home!) because whatever happened the wound is now infected.  They have to take him to the vet every day for the next 4 days, and they have to keep warm washcloths over the bandage all night (good thing mom doesn't work so she can sleep tomorrow).

  • Do they live anywhere that has brown recluses? We had one of our cats get bit about 2 years ago and she got this huge black rotten spot on the back of her neck. She went through several rounds of antibiotics & had to have all the dead skin cut off. It was absolutely horrible.

I'm not sure.  They llive about a half hour outside of Atlanta.  I'll mention that to my mom tonight when I talk to her.  I didn't want to bother her this morning (we usually talk on my way to work) because I know she was up all night taking care of him.
