Gift idea for a 12 year old?

It's our 10 year old cousin's birthday tomorrow.  We brought her back a big bag of gummi bears from Germany (that she requested) but want to get her a little something else, too.  I'm puzzled though.

She's 10 (going into 7th grade?  do I have the age right?).  Likes art and reading.  Maybe some cool art thing?  A book?  No clue!!!  Anyone hip to these things with a good rec?  Looking to spend like $10-20 or so.

*** EDITED: subject line to reflect cousin's actual age...

Re: Gift idea for a 12 year old?

  • 10 is either 4th or 5th grade. If she's already 10 tomorrow, she's probably starting/just started 5th grade. Anyway, yeah a cool art thing would be great. There's all kinds of stuff at good toy stores for that. Find out what books she likes. GL!
  • If she's 10, she's likely going into 5th grade. (Most kids are 5 years old when going into kindergarten.)

At that age she'd probably like one of those crafty kits, like make your own candles, or make your own lip balm, or something like that.

    GL!

  • OK.  She's definitely past 5th grade.  So, I re-read the invitation.  She's turning 12.

    Does that change things?

  • Oh, and then recommend where to find whatever you recommend.  Somewhere between Berkeley and Redwood City would be great.  Thanks!!!!!!!!!!!
  • Yep 12 and 7th grade sounds right. It really depends how old of a 12 year old she is but since she requested gummy bears she sounds like she's not 12 going on 25. I would think a cute nail polish set, some crafty thing like make your own beads/necklaces or a gift card to her favorite store.

Mm, yeah 12 is definitely different than 10. I was thinking Sweet Dreams toy store in Berkeley has nice stuff. You might still look there. You could find art project stuff at art supply stores (there's one on Shattuck in Berkeley). Of course even just Toys R Us would have some or Michael's. GL!
  • if they had an ipod..definitely an itunes GC.

my kid is 13..and she still LOVES drawing.  so perhaps some drawing materials...markers, pencils, crayons, paper :)

  • You guys are great!  Thanks a bunch!

  • Not sure if I'm late (if I am, file these away) but there's a series of books called Kiki Strike - there are two so far (and I WISH she would write more) - by Kirsten Miller. It's hard to describe, but the characters are all about 12. I cannot recommend them enough.

    HTH!

Not too late!  I just emailed the mom to make sure she hasn't already read them.  there's a local bookstore down the street that i LOVE so i like buying things there when i can (and it helps that they have wrapping paper and a gift wrapping station gratis!)

  • awesome :-)
