Browsing Austin

Hey Ladies,

My fiance and I are relocating to Austin after our wedding, and planning a trip this labor day to check areas out. Does anyone have advise or suggestions on where to start? We want to scout out the city and also drive through areas where we may live. We are from New Orleans, where their are mainly houses for rent in old neighboorhoods, but we have yet to find anything like that in Austin. We would not mind being close to downtown, but do not want to be in suburbs.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Re: Browsing Austin

  • Do you know what part of town you'll be working in? Traffic can be bad going in some directions, so that will narrow things down. And do you know how much you want to spend on rent each month?

I would love to live in South Austin off of South Congress avenue - the houses are adorable and there are a ton of restaurants and shops nearby. Unfortunately (as it usually is with fun parts of town) it can be pretty pricey.

  • I agree that you don't want to live too far from where you'll be working due to traffic issues.

There are a lot of neighborhoods in Austin with older homes that rent.  Some friends of mine from New Orleans rent in Allandale, which is the furthest north of the neighborhoods I'd suggest.  Also check out Hyde Park, Tarrytown, Clarksville, Barton Hills.  (I could be wrong on the neighborhood name of Barton Hills--I'm thinking of the neighborhood close to Zilker Park.)  All of these are fairly central, though not downtown.
