side dish suggestions for grilled brats?

DH is wanting to grill these for dinner - for some reason I am racking my brain but can't come up with any good sides!  Thoughts?  Sauerkraut?  No... is that better for kielbalsa?  Help! :)

Re: side dish suggestions for grilled brats?

  • German potato salad or balsamic pasta salad (I don't like mayo-based salads so I do this instead with roasted veg) would both work.

  • Hot german potato salad.  I have a recipe in my blog, it has bacon in it :)

We also make a cucumber salad. Thinly slice cucumbers, add tons of fresh chopped dill, add some sour cream, and a dash of white vinegar, salt and pepper to taste.  You can throw a little red onion in there too if you want.

  • potato salad, beans, oven fries, 3 bean salad, pasta salad, coleslaw

I just like ketchup and mustard on mine.  DH likes raw onions, tomatoes, relish and secret stadium sauce.  Some people like cheese.  Others like sauerkraut.  Are you precooking them in beer and onions?

I usually marinate them for a few hours in some guinness or other dark beer/stout.  Is that what you're talking about?

Marinate brats? That's the strangest thing I've ever heard! Boil in beer, and onions if you like, prior to throwing on the grill.

  • I also recommend potato salad

Also my sister-in-law serves hers with a fresh salad of tomato, cucumber and red onion (and avocado if you like it) tossed with red wine vinegar salt and pepper.

Wisconsin girl coming in here- def don't marinate the brats! :)We also boil them in beer and onions. Saurkraut is traditional (on the brats), German potato salad is also popular. Fried cheese curds would be awesome, and drink with a bottle of beer.

This! I also like to throw mine back in a mixture of beer and grilled onions for a few minutes before serving, then we eat them with the grilled onions on top.
