Will sweet potato vine overrun the ivy?

I'm planning on planting ivy on a steep hill in my front yard.  It's quite large, and will take a while for the ivy to get established.  I was thinking of planting sweet potato vine (annual) in between for the first year.  Thinking that it will die off in the fall, and give the ivy time to get established on the hill.  I'm thinking this will keep the weeds down on the hill, and give a nice visual for the landscape as the ivy grows in.  I'm concerned though, that the sweet potato vines may actually compete with the ivy and kill off the ivy, then die in the fall, and I'll have an expensive hill of dirt and weeds.

Whatcha think?
