Grass question...

My husband talked to our neighbor that has an amazing lawn, and he recommended using fertilizer to get rid of the mushrooms (previous post) we did have, and to green up our lawn. So we mowed the lawn, fertilized it and watered it. Today it is looking dead, like winter dead. It has a few yellow and brown spots. I don't understand why it would die, aren't you supposed to fertilize the lawn this time of year?

If you cannot tell, I've never had a grass lawn, I'm used to Arizona desert front and back yard.

If it means anything, the blend was 15-20-15, it is what the neighbor said he uses. Its is a cheaper brand, but would that really make a difference?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Grass question...

  • you could have over fertilized and burned the grass

I was thinking the same thing.  Did you use a spreader that has an adjustable output?

  • Honestly I didn't see the point in paying $20 for the fertilizer spreader I would use once a year...now maybe I should've gotten the dang thing. I did it by hand.

My lawn will recover from this..right?
  • Yeah sounds like its burnt from uneven distrubution.  Not sure about how long it will retake to recover. Check out a book called the Organic Lawn Care Manual its really helped us. We top dressed our lawn with compost this year and it looks amazing.  it was also the first on the block to come out of hibernation.

    nothing
  • I just read here that daily watering will help encourage growth, but don't water at night.  Good luck!
