Hearty grass for people with dogs?

I'm not sure what kind of grass the prior owner planted (it's very low to the ground and stayed green all winter) but it easily stains/dies from dog pee.

Is there any type of grass that is heartier and will resist that better?  We're in NJ and it looks like the yard will be fairly shaded come summer.

  • dog pee will kill any grass unless you water A LOT

  • We feed our dog a supplement a few times a day (GrassSaver) and it really makes a difference.  You can find it at any pet store, Amazon, Drugstore.com etc.  We still end up having to replace a few small patches at the end of summer but it's much better than when we didn't give her a supplement.

  • It's not the grass - it's your soil.

Dog urine is high in nitrogen.  If it's burning your grass, you have a lot of nitrogen already in your soil.  Fertilizing, btw, will only make this worse.

Have a soil analysis done and take necessary steps based on the results.  Most states agricultural extension office will do this.
