Baby Shower luncheon - looking for food ideas

My sister is throwing a baby shower for me.  It will be 10 of my closest friends, my mom, my sister and I.  My sister lives 3 hours away and friends are all here in town, so it will be held at my house.

I have seating for all 13 of us.  I plan on pulling out my white table cloths and using my antique china dishes, so it will be elegant (vs casual).  My sister plans on serving a full lunch.

My sister has asked me what I want for food, as she knows I am a foodie.  My problem?  I don't know.  Usually I'd have the time to hit the blogs.  Right now I'm working a ton, so I have very little free time.  The few times I've been able to google, I haven't come up with anything that has hit me with inspiration.  So I'm asking you all for ideas.  I've gone back and read over the tea time posts.  Not opposed, just wondering what some other options are out there.

I do know that she is planning on making cupcakes.  Each one will have a little birds nest on top (theme is birds).  I know people have their opinions about cupcakes, but she is throwing the shower and I am very thankful for that.  :-)

  • I was at a bridal shower last May and one hit was Sassy Water. It comes out of the Flat Bell Diet book, but it is very refreshing and something different.

    Here is the recipe:

    The Sassy Water Recipe

    Sassy Water

    2 liters water (about 8 ? cups)
    1 teaspoon freshly grated ginger
1 medium cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
    1 medium lemon, thinly sliced
    12 small spearmint leaves.

Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and let flavors blend overnight.

    Hope you enjoy!

That sounds very refreshing!  Did they leave in the frut/leaves or was that strained out?

I feel like this is a silly question, but what are the "opinions" about cupcakes?  I didn't know there was anything not to like!  :)

Anyway, I really like the idea of afternoon tea, especially if you're going to be doing something more formal with those nice dishes.  It is a lot of work though so I guess she would want to consider that.  But I do have some good recipes with lox, cucumber & watercress and apple & boursin.

Another idea, I went to a baby shower where the theme was comfort food and everything was mini so we could all have a little of each - mac&cheese in ramekins, tomato soup with a mini cheese toast etc.

  • I also like the idea of a tea. She could de finger sandwiches: cucumber & watercress, chicken salad, salmon, egg salad. I also lose fruit salad, it's always refreshing. A green salad would be good as well. Mini quiche is always yummy. And that sassy water recipe looks good. Have a great time!

  • The last baby shower I went had a very simple but very foodie menu

Curried Chicken Salad (Recipe Below) served in Pineapple halves.

    Snowflake rolls

    Flowered lemonade

Raspberry Chiffon Cake with fresh raspberries and mint leaves.

The rolls and cake were picked up from the great bakery.  I added fresh raspberries and mint leaves around the serving platter for the cake.

    Curried Chicken Salad (Serves 4)

    Dressing

    3/4 cup mayo

    2 tsp curry powder

    2 tsp lite soy sauce.

    2 tsp lemon juice

    Salad

    3 cups cubed cooked chicken

    1 11oz can mandarin oranges

    1 cup seedless grapes halved

    1 cup finely diced celery

1 8 oz can sliced water chestnuts.

    1 head Boston Lettuce

Mix Dressing ingredients and let sit for  30 minutes in the refrigerator.  Slice fruits and vegetables.  Drain oranges.  Mix all ingredients EXCEPT lettuce together.  Arrange 3-4 leaves of lettuce into a cup shape and add salad.  Serve immediately.   Makes four main dish servings.  For the shower, we cut the pineapples in half cut out the core  and sliced out the fruit.  We added half the fruit to the salad and served the remaining fruit in a separate bowl.    If you need this salad to sit before serving, do not add the fruit until just before serving.   The curry flavor is not pronounced but lifts the salad up from your basic chicken salad.  Presentation in the pineapple halves is very impressive.

The flowered lemonade was a fancy mold half filled with water that was frozen.  We then arranaged edible flowers (chives, pansies and narcissa from our local herb garden (no pesticides) ) on top of the ice, carefully poured water over the flowers and froze the flowers in place.  We placed the ice in a punch bowl filled with Newmans' lemonade.

  • Thanks for all of the responses!  You gave me so things to think about. :-)
