Anyone in the Little Rock area?

Hi ladies.  My DH and I are going to be moving from Alaska to the Little Rock area middle of next year.  We know next to nothing about the area.  Long story short, I'm very unhappy up here, and Little Rock is close enough to my family to drive it if I need to, but far enough away that I don't have to if I don't want to. ;)  Anyway, any tips to share about the area?  He's a network administrator, and I'm a secretary.  Any places we should start out looking for jobs?  What is there to do for fun down there? TIA for the help!

Re: Anyone in the Little Rock area?

  • I just moved away from Little Rock about a year ago. Prior to that I lived there my whole life and I love it! People are so nice there, the cost of living is low and there are a lot of fun things to do! There are a lot of little 'suburbs' of Little Rock, but you should definitely live in Little Rock. Two of my favorite areas of Little Rock are The Heights and Hillcrest. They are in the center of the city and they are fun and a little funky. There are a lot of good restaurants in that area as well. Downtown is a fun place to go on the weekends. Also there are TONS of outdoor activities if you are into that.

You could look anywhere for a job and your husband might want to look into Axiom which is headquartered in Little Rock. I hope this helps you and hope you enjoy Little Rock!

  • Hey there!  I've lived in Little Rock for about 2 years.  My husband has lived in Arkansas his entire life.  There are a ton of things to do in Little Rock.  The River Market is always a great way to start a Saturday morning.  It's even open during the week (I think on Tuesdays).  Memorial Day weekend always is entertaining with River Fest.  There are tons of bands playing in downtown Little Rock - music for all tastes.  I agree with the other post about the Heights and Hillcrest.  It's a great quaint little area with lots of cool shops and great food.  I live in a suburb of Little Rock, just because the taxes in Saline County are cheaper than in Pulaski County.  Little Rock has the Bill Clinton Presidential Library with all sorts of historical programs and tours.  If you like outdoorsy things, there's the Big Dam Bridge.  Many people go there for exercise to walk or ride bikes, or even walk their dogs.  The Big Dam bridge is a starting point to a 14 mile walking/biking trail around Little Rock.  My husband and I have done this many times - great experience.  There's Pinnacle Mountain you can hike, plus all of the many other places to hike and camp in Arkansas.  Hot Springs is not far from Little Rock and has a TON of history, especially with the historical bath houses on the main strip.  I could go on forever about the things to do in this area.  I know I've rambled, I'm sorry!  Smile If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.  If you need a tour guide, let me know and my husband and I can meet you somewhere when you get here and we'll give you a tour!  Good luck with it all!

that would be great!  thanks for all the info.  We're not going down till may, but I will probably have lots of questions between now and then anyway. :)  We're going to be in Sherwood.  Well, that's the plan for now anyway.  BIL owns a house there, and it comes open in May, so that's the plan unless his renters get a wild hair and decide they want to buy it.  Chances of that are very, very slim, but its in their rental contract that they can buy it if they want, so i suppose it's always a possibility.  DH and I aren't really super outdoorsy.  We do enjoy an easy stroll, but we're not much for hiking.  River Market sounds pretty cool.  We'll have to check that out.  Thanks again for all the info.  It's a big help!

  • Welcome! I hope you will love it here in AR!

I moved to the LR area about 3 & 1/2 years ago from Texas and I really love it here. I actually live in Conway, which is about 40 miles northwest of LR but wanted to chime in too..lol

Very outdoorsy area with lots of mountains, which are actually huge hills, and lakes. The heat is yucky in the Summer but we have a lovely Fall and Spring and a nice Winter. People are extremely friendly and the food is perfectly Southern. Other pluses are: 3 hours from Memphis, 5 from Dallas and I think it's about 3 hours to Branson, MO.

    TTC since April 2008

Me: PCOS/Amenorrhea DH: Azoospermia due to Y Chromosome Micro Deletion IVF w/ ICSI on hold until further notice

    Hope

  • Hello there! I'm in Conway as well, but DH commutes to LR. I'll second the Hillcrest/Heights area being pretty awesome (wish we could move into LR), but other areas are much more affordable. Hot Springs is about an hour away from LR & offers some fun stuff as well.
