Do stool samples need to be refrigerated?

Had the lovely experience of the boy sh+itting pure diarrhea in his firetruck undies. And I had to take a stool sample, but the lab is closed. Shoveling sticky diarrhea into 2 different cups smells pretty bad, btw Any way, do I store it in the fridge or no?

Re: Do stool samples need to be refrigerated?

  • I know with cats, the answer is yes. If you can't get it in right away, refrigerate.
  • After gross awkwardness in the work fridge, yes, I'm pretty sure they need to be refrigerated.
  • I have no idea but I thought it had to be semi... um... fresh?

but I am the girl who took a large dump in a cottage cheese container, so maybe you shouldn't listen to me.

  • I guess it won't hurt the poo, but won't it stink up the refrigerator?

  • when I've done cat stool samples, I've double freezer bagged them.
  • I thought it had to be fresh.

  • Depends.  Look at the labeling / instructions. (Some have preservatives, others need to be kept cool.)

okay, well she should have said it's poorly timed for westcoasters who eat dinner with their toddlers while nesting.

The labeling instructions on the poo?  LOL, I never looked through my kids' poop to see what the instructions say.

And I just heartily LOLed at the memory of Floyd's cottage cheese container poop.

Last, I have no idea if they need to be refrigerated, but with the dog if they need to see her the next day, I just figure I'll get another terrible poop by the morning and wait until then to collect it.  Otherwise, I'd probably just set it outside the door.  Because poop in the fridge is beyond awful for me to imagine.

Speak for yourself missy!  We don't eat until 6:30.

We don't get home from work until 6 though, so that is most of the reason.

  • Don't you have 2 containers of poo?  One in the fridge and one not in the fridge.  Walla - you are covered no matter what they need.

  • I'd put maybe half of the dump in a container and put it in the crisper to keep it extra cold.

this was seriously my fav. story of all time. I tell it at parties and end up crying-laughing by the time I finish telling it EVERY TIME

  • oh cool, I come back to 23 responses!

I put it in the fridge, but it's in the garage fridge, and they're in airtight containers and in a ziplock. That honestly was one of the most disgusting things I've ever had to do. I was so intimate with his very smelly poo, and...playing with it. It was gross. I thought I'd done it all when it came to kids. I was wrong!

Oh and I think I want to hear floyd's cottage cheese container story. I think.

  • lol at this whole thread.  The things moms do.
