One more for the Prevacid mommies

I was able to get my doctor to switch Luke to the prevacid. Your glowing reviews have me very hopeful that it will be easier for him to get down and keep down AND that it will work well for his reflux. My insurance does cover it, but it is a $50 copay. I figure it will be well worth it if it works and if the administration of it goes much better. They prescribed half a tablet and the pharmacist said they are VERY hard to cut evenly. Any tips? Also, I know All_his said they only used 2-3 ML of water with it-- is that what worked best for everyone? 4 ML seems like a lot, and the pharm said you are actually supposed to give them a second syringe of water to get out any lingering particles. She also mentioned some babies have loose stools with it-- any experience with that side effect?

How long did it take for you to see results?

  • I didn't find it hard to cut with a pill cutter at all. It's pretty soft.

We used very little water and by using All-His's method to turn it, we were able to get all of the granules out pretty well. More water actually made it hard to get it all out for me.

We didn't have any loose stools although BF'd baby poo is always kind of interesting. lol!

Nobody said life would be easy. Just that it would be worth it.

  • I agree w Mrs.Reem - They weren't hard at all to cut w/ a cheap little pill cutter.  In fact, we got the 30 mg dosage and cut it into 4ths once in a while.  (G was only on 7.5 mg)

And less water worked better for us too - just don't push it in too quickly. allow the sediment to fall into the nozzle of the syringe and keep rotating to get it all to do so.  No loose stools here either - just the normal type of soft bfed poop.

  • What we did was a little different than what most people do so take it with a grain of salt. My son would spit out the pill even if it was mixed with water. So my docotor had me put the half pill in his mouth and give him some water from a bottle/sippy cup to make it disolv.(he was 4 months old at the time). He now takes 2 full tablets twice a day and takes them both whole...I told you we did it different!! :)

We also noticed the best results if we gave him the Prevacid on an empty tummy and waited at least 30 minutes after he took it to feed him.

I never noticed a change in his diapers at all.

  • The pills aren't hard to break in half. I had to break it to get it into the syringe and would often just break it in half with my fingers! I would put the pill in the syringe and then suck up about a ml of water and just wait for it to dissolve. I didn't shake it. She actually tookit really well and we didn't need to give any extra water.

  • well i must have a different RX or something.  we have 15mg solutabs that are strawberry.  we put a whole tab in a syringe with 4ml water... then we only give him 1.5ml of the solution.  we haven't had any side effects... we saw results in 2 days.  good luck.

I bet this is the same Rx techincally, just different instructions from your provider. I have heard of this method before, but for me it is problematic b/c you really can't be certain how much of the solutab they are getting if you only take part of the water.  On some occasions it might be the full 15 mg, on others you might not get any of it. We did prevacid for 8 months and although I got fairly proficient at giving it, we couldn't be certain it was done consistently in terms of the amt of granuals each time.  To me it just made more sense to perfectly dose out the actual tab, and not dose the water.  I think 15 mg is a pretty common dosage.  G was just on 7.5mg b/c she was pretty small and this was sufficient to do the trick for her.
