My beef with Johnston & where to feed ducks

Seriously there are no parks! They have one with a playground and it's just eh. I'm missing West Des Moines where there's an awesome park every 10 blocks. ...and the library. WDM's is great for kids and so is Clive's. Johnstons? Not so much.

I really NEED to get the kids out of this itty bitty rental before I go nuts but it looks like I'll have to drive everywhere.

Okay sorry. There was no point to that rant. On to the next question...

Where can I take the girls to feed ducks?

Nobody said life would be easy. Just that it would be worth it.

Re: My beef with Johnston & where to feed ducks

  • Go over on Pioneer Parkway and there are always ducks over there! There is a nice neighborhood and sidewalks to walk on and there is a pond over there where you can feed some ducks.
  • You could pack them up and go to Walker Johnston in Urbandale. There's a decent playground near the baseball fields. Nice walking trails too. I don't recall ducks though. But there's a nice pond near 80th(ish) and Aurora, which isn't too far from W.J. park. There were always tons of ducks there when I lived nearby.

Edit: Oh and Urbandale's library is really close to Walker Johnston too. When I used to go there years ago, I never paid attention to whether or not it was kid friendly. But maybe worth checking out?

Happy mom to two sweet, silly boys: Cohen age 4, AJ age 2.
  • lol! We're living right along pioneer parkway right now. Maybe I just need to open my eyes!

We're going to give Walker Johnston a try too. That sounds ideal.

  • Have you driven up NW Beaver drive and checked out the play areas by Saylorville? I think there is a nice playground by the disc golf course (further north than the boat ramp area).

I think they are trying to get a huge recreation area in the works soon with play areas, ball fields, etc. - so you have that to look forward to! :o)

    We love Jester Park!

I also really like the Urbandale library-they are together with the Johnston library so you can check out books with the same card. I also really like the Clive library too!

  • The Urbandale Library is really great. And I love their children's area - they had Sticks do endplates at the ends of the aisles and a bunch of the childrens' furniture. Lots of colors - fun!

Maybe it's back up and running now but they drained this pond earlier this spring and there was no water in it and no ducks. I think it had something to do with the Middle School building an extension and they had to move some wetlands back behind the school or something? I just didn't want you to drive all the way there if it the pond was still gone. Once they fill it back in it's a great place to feed ducks!

  • I'll have to check out the Urbandale Library. It sounds more fun!

I haven't tried Saylorville yet. I'm kind of intimidated by the area because I'm afraid I'll get lost. I know that's an unfounded fear as I've never been there. Maybe I'll have to have DH take me there some night. lol! (He's originally from Johnston.)

Ladies you have made my entire day with your suggestions. All is not lost now. :) Thank you!!
