Flat screen TV over mantle/fireplace?

We just got our first flat screen tv this weekend......DH got his dream tv and got a 52".  We have a long LR and sit over 16 feet away from the tv, so the size is somewhat justified, but it honestly is sooooo large, in real life above our fireplace/mantle.  If I could do it over, I would pick the 46" - the next size down.  (However, the screen is not that size, it's just the actual width of the tv).

Does anyone else have a flat screen over their mantle?

We have a tv niche that the flat screen tv covers up and the tv is almost as long as the mantle.  I've had to take down all of my decor on the mantle that I spent lots of time "designing" and putting together, as well as money spent.

I told DH that I am mourning the loss of my decor items (wedding pics, candle holders).  I may have a spot or two for the pictures, but no spots for the candles.  :-(

Re: Flat screen TV over mantle/fireplace?

  • We have one in our family room.  PIB.  The bookcase holds the cable box, dvd player etc.  I also hung long shelves on the other side to put things on.
  • Is above the fireplace the only good spot for it?  It seems that it would be a little high for optimum viewing.  I have head that you should place your televisions at eye level.  Maybe if there was a different spot you could keep all your decor on the mantel.

  • Ms.MKBT - very good point about putting the tv at eye level.  Although, I don't have a stand to put it on, and don't want to purchase one right now.  Plus, the way our LR is, and with the type & quantity of furniture we have in the room, a tv stand would not fit anywhere - unfortunately.

  • If it wouldn't fit anywhere else appropriately, then I would just go ahead with the above the fireplace.  A lot of people I've seen have their components either in a bookcase near the TV or in a nearby closet.

  • We thought about putting up our flat screen above the fireplace, but we read that the heat from your fire will ruin your tv eventually.

  • 1)  The heat from the fireplace will not ruin your tv, especially in a newer house.  There is insullation between the actual chimney and the wall.

    2)  If you use a mount that tilts, there are no problems viewing your tv.  Seriously.  I watch it everyday and I've never had a problem.

PIB if you care to look at my setup.  Our tv is only a 42" so I have some room for vases on the mantle.  Is your niche completely flush with the mantle?  Our tv hangs a good ways above our mantle so I'm still able to have decor up there, but I kept it minimal since I didn't want there to be too much going on with it.  We are also totally unable to put a tv anywhere else in our room but honestly I think it looks great up there.  A lot of people on this board aren't a fan though.
