Finally got my garden started!

DH is home this afternoon and is watching DS, so I had no reason to not do it  ;)  I know it is a bit late, but hopefully they will catch up.

I have my normal tomatoes and cucumber and am trying (again) zucchini, yellow squash, watermelon, and cantelope.  I'll probably do carrots and such later.

Anyone else?

    I have germination down here.

I only have garlic, shallots and onions in teh ground right now.  (Onions are new for this year.  Shallots were a great crop last year.  And garlic is a retry after 2 years of failure.) In a few weeks I should see them sprouting.

I set up my germination flats about 2 weeks ago. Inside I have tomatoes (8 heirloom varieties), cucumbers (regular and lemon), basil (8 cultivars), sweet peppers (banana, chocolate and merlot), artichoke, broccoli (Packman and romano?), okra, borage and marigolds. I need to transplant them into my small pots for the next few weeks. I figure I'll harden off in early-mid April and transplant in April.  I went a little crazy this year and bought a grow heat lamp system.  It should get here this weekend so hopefully no leggy seedlings anymore!

This weekend I'm going to put in my greens (arugula, mesculin, mustard greens and rainbow chard).  And I'm going to try potatoes and horseradish this year.  I think I can put those in the ground this weekend.  Still not sure when I will plant the garbanzo beans and snap peas - those were an utter failure last year.

Pumpkins, watermelon and canteloupe will go into the ground in May when teh soil warms up.  And corn goes in sometime in April/May.

I think I'm goign to try leeks again too.  I never got them to germinate last year, so I still need a plan.  And carrots I think I'll plant under my tomatoes.

And then I have a bunch of herbs I need to start from seed.

I do think I am a bit nuts this year.  I don't have enough room for all the veggies/herbs I have planned. I think I a lot of herbs and teh leeks will have to go into containers.

  • Wow, sounds like you are going strong!  I love the planting carrots under the tomatoes idea, genius!  I think in a few months we are going to have to post garden pics.
