Getting rid of ants in paver patio

Ants have taken over our paver patio and there are ant hills all over.  We put it in 3 years ago and haven't had problems until now.  Any ideas for how to get rid of them?  I'd really prefer something that isn't toxic to pets but I'll use chemicals if I have to.

I've tried Epsom salts around the mounds which sort of worked.  There aren't as many ants but they're still there.   I've also tried soaking the patio with water and that didn't work either.

Tired after a long morning of hiking and swimming.

  • This is happening to ours this year too. I think it's from all of the rain we've been getting.

We usually use Ortho Home Defense around the house so I might spray that around this weekend and see if it works...

  • I think the Terro ant baits are supposed to be safe for pets.  And I know that you can put them outside.  I've had luck with them indoors.

I have also heard that red chili pepper or cinnamon will work, but I haven't tried either for ants.

When you tried water, did you use boiling water?

  • Try spraying with a vinegar and dishsoap mix.  You'll have to keep spraying, or go to your garden center and ask for a pet safe repellant/killer.
  • Thanks ladies.  Boiling water seems to have worked.
