Who here delivered naturally?

I'm about 15 wks pregnant & plan on delivering naturally. I remeber someone on this board stating that they did this & recommending their doula. Please recommend any classes or other resources available in the Jax area. Thanks!

Re: Who here delivered naturally?

  • Ouchie!!  :)     No advice, just wanted to say congrats and GL!
  • Yeah. One of my clients is a urogynecologist, and based on everything he's told me, there's no effing way I'd give birth naturally.
  • I plan on it someday....but i'm no help now.

I think Kristin&Adam recommended a doula to someone.

I'm about 99% sure Kristin did.

  • It was Kristin and she recommends Heather Palmer.  My BFF also used Heather as a doula.  She is on Facebook.

Congrats on your pregnancy and your plan to go natural.  I am 29.5 weeks and I also plan to try to have a natural birth without meds.

  • I also planning on doing a home study with the Hypnobabies booklet and CDs.  It's available on Amazon.  Not to be confused with HypnoBirthing which is another product.

Yep, it's Kristin.  In the old days on this board, there were a bunch of ladies who had natural deliveries, and I think some of them used the same doula.  Too bad they're not around here anymore.  My mom gave birth twice naturally and had a great experience!  Good luck!

  • Just throwing this out there, my mom had five kids (two recently). She did four natural births and the last one she had to get the epidural to tie her tubes. After that, she told me she didn't know why the heck she had them natural. To each her own, but when my day comes, give me the meds.

I think everyone has a different experience.  I know just as many people who said that they had a much better experience going natural vs. medicated so who knows...lol  I guess it depends on the person.  I'm afraid of having an epidural after hearing my DH's coworker's story.  She had one and was almost paralyzed because of it so it's nothing to take lightly.  Giving birth is risky no matter how you do it.  I'm just going to wait and see how I feel at the time lol.

Agreed.. my mom had me and my brother naturally.. she was in labor with me for 18 hours with lots of complications.  I was born with a broken nose... so yeah.. I'll be talking the drugs when my time comes.

  • I attempted to do a natural childbirth and lasted a good 4 hours through it. But when my baby was not getting enough oxygen because I was not breathing deep enough, they really thought meds would be the right thing. And BOY WERE THEY RIGHT! Im so happy I did it because before the meds, I was in pain, upset and didnt want to see anyone. Once the meds took effect (which was an additional hour) I was peaceful, wanted to see everyone and even managed to nap a little.

So if my day comes again.... give me the meds!

  • I delivered my son naturally - the only intervention was a saline drip, which I didn't want.. but I was fully dialated when I got to the hospital so it was the least of my concerns.

I used Heather Harper Palmer - she was absolutely fabulous, totally worth her weight in gold.  I plan to use her again for #2.

I also took Bradley classes with Cecilia Mitchell Miller.  She's like an encyclopedia on birthing (as is Heather).

Delivering naturally is, in normal circumstances, better for mom & baby.  I had an amazing experience and I give most of the credit for that to my birth team - DH was super supportive, as was Heather, and Cee totally prepared me in the classes.  I can't tell you how empowering it is when you're in labor to know exactly what your body is doing and why.

I won't lie, contractions hurt - but it was never anything ridiculous that I couldn't handle.  It was mostly just uncomfortable for a minute, then it went away and I rested in between.  Actually pushing him out was a relief - it didn't hurt at all.  There was so much pressure from not pushing (I had to try not to push the entire car ride to the hospital) that once they let me push, I didn't want to stop.

Let me know if you have any questions.  You're doing an amazing thing :) The feeling afterward is indescribable.  You'll get a lot of comments about how its crazy - but, to each their own. :)  I wanted to do what was best for my son, and in my situation - delivering med-free was best.

  • I posted that last post before I was done.. oops :)

I don't mean to sound all high and mighty about natural birth - no matter how the baby gets here - at the end of the day all that really matters is that mom & baby are both healthy.  I went into it planning to deliver med-free, but was not opposed to getting an epidural should the situation warrant it.

The big issue I had with getting and epi is that it slows down your labor, which leads to a higher rate of c-sections.  It also causes the baby not to be as alert after birth, which can cause problems with nursing (if you plan to breastfeed).

I really never thought to ask for the meds, it never got to the point where I couldn't take it. There was one point where I told Adam I couldn't do it anymore, but I realized I'd hit transition and knew that it would be over soon and that I was at the worst part.. seriously, give Cee a call.  She and I didn't see eye-to-eye on everything, but her classes are wonderful.

  • Thanks for all that information, Kristin!  I'll have to talk to you about this more when we're finally TTC.  I'm really interested in learning more about the Bradley method too.
