Is it true Frontline is being discontinued?

Hey ladies!

I went to my vet (Banfield) last week to pick up more Frontline, and I was told by the girl at the register that Frontline was being discontinued and that I could buy it this time, but starting the next time I'd need to choose something else.

I'm hesitant to move to something else since my dogs have done well on Frontline for several years now.

I just checked Frontline's website, and it doesn't say anything about not making it anymore??

Does anyone have the scoop on this?  Are they really not going to make it?  Or has my vet's office just decided not to carry it?

Thanks so much for any info!!

  • I'm pretty sure that your vet's office is just not going to carry it anymore. They're still in business as far as I've heard. Nobody at my vet has heard differently.

  • Weird, I was at my vet getting some yesterday too and she didn't say anything. I have heard that the EPA is investigating some 44,000 complaints on adverse reactions from various flea/tick medication, Frontline included.
  • I haven't heard anything to that effect.

The only thing a google search is turning up is that Meriel loses it's patent on Frontline next year (haven't verified whether that's true or not).

Oh no, that scares me.  One of the reasons I'm scared to switch is that I'd heard one brand of flea and tick medicine had killed some dogs a few years ago.

Thanks for all the info, ladies.  I guess I'll just have to start buying it online instead of from the vet!

  • My guess is that she means that their clinic is discontinuing it.

I have not heard that and a google search turns up nothing. ?

Since Banfield is a chain, they probably have random directions from corporate about what to carry and other policies. ?

Just FYI, you can generally find better vets for less money than Banfield. ?Just like you can find better food for less money at independent shops rather than the chains. ?

We order our frontline and heartworm preventative (with an Rx for the HW preventative) from Fostersmith.com.?

Isn't it typically cheaper online anyway?

  • The 44,000 number of complains includes crap products like Hartz (probably the one you heard about).  I haven't seen a broken-out number where X number were for Hartz, Y were from Frontline, etc.

Also, the number of complaints includes everything from mild skin irritation to, yes, death. Again, I have not seen a broken out number.  Also, Federal law requires EPA registrants to submit reports of possible adverse reactions that may be related to the use of their products, whether or not the products were used properly and according to label instructions.

    Article with more info.

  • We've never had any issues with Frontline. Stella has never had any reactions to it, she only shakes after we put it on her. I asked my vet about the EPA complaints and she said the most serious reaction they've heard about is skin irritation. She told me as long as Stella is ok with it then don't change. We don't plan on changing.

It depends on the vet and if they price-match. ?Just like any meds (human or dogs), I also wouldn't buy it from a random site - I would stick with one of the more well-known ones like Fostersmith (which is a pharmacy and has vets on staff). ?Their prices are very good also.

  • Banfields are really pricey; I buy from a local feed store or a vet close to my house that sells it cheaper. You don't need a script for it and I just walk in and buy from someplace else.
  • Frontline plus is being discontinued and replaced
